Fri 23 Apr 2004 "Gypsy" to close on Sunday 30 May 2004 at the Shubert Theatre It has been confirmed that the musical Gypsy will close on Broadway after a 14-month run on Sunday, 30th May 2004 at the Shubert Theatre The production will have played 451 performances and 33 previews. The musical had previously announced a closing date of 28 Feb 2004, but increased tickets sales allowed the musical to continue three further months. Despite a recent extension on ticket sales to the 5 Sep 2004, the show will now close Sunday 30 May 2004. Starring Bernadette Peters as Mama Rose, the show opened on 1 May 2003, following previews from 31 March 2003. It has book by Arthur Laurents, Music by Jule Styne, Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. It is directed by Sam Mendes, with choreography by Jerry Mitchell & Jerome Robbins. A consummate show-biz musical suggested by the memoirs of stripper Gypsy Rose Lee � who was once just plain Louise, the awkward daughter of an unstoppable stage mother and sister to Dainty June, a child star of a minor vaudeville circuit.
