Will Miss Saigon land on Broadway in 2016?
The London production of Miss Saigon yesterday announced that it would end its revival run at the Prince Edward Theatre on 27 February 2016, closing to make way for the transfer of Disney's Aladdin which will open at the venue later that year. The revival will have run for just shy of two years.
In an official closing statement, the show's producer, Cameron Mackintosh, said that transfers of the production are "planned to open in Germany, Australia and Broadway in the next two years."
No Broadway venue or dates have been suggested, but it is expected that the production will open in the 2016/17 season.
The current London company stars American performers Eva Noblezada and Chris Peluso as lovers Kim and Chris, along with Jon Jon Briones as The Engineer, Siobhan Dillon as Elllen, Hugh Maynard as John, Sangwoong Jo as Thuy and Natalie Mendoza as Gigi.
The London revival was met with a cool reception by critics, and failed to win any Olivier Awards at the 2015 ceremony. The run pales in comparison with the original historic ten-year run at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane which clocked over 4000 performances.
The original Broadway production opened at the Broadway Theatre on 11 April 1991 and ran for 4092 regular performances until 28 January 2001. It is the 12th longest running musical in Broadway history.
