Vanities has delayed its production until later this season.

Vanities, A New Musical, which was scheduled to open on Broadway on 26 Feb 2009 has delayed its production until later this season. New preview and opening dates, and a theatre, are to be announced.

Written by Jack Heifner, with music and lyrics by David Kirshenbaum, directed by Judith Ivey, and starring Lauren Kennedy, Sarah Stiles and Anneliese van der Pol, Vanities was to have opened on 26 Feb 2009, following previews from 2 Feb, at the Lyceum Theatre

On news of the postponement, lead producer Sue Frost issued the following statement The production is being rescheduled for later this season out of responsibility to the investors at this complicated economic time, which makes it very hard to support a new musical on Broadway.

Based on the 1976 comedy that ran for 1,785 performances Off-Broadway, Vanities takes a look at the journey of three All-American girls as they mature from cheerleaders to sorority sisters to independent women. Spanning the turbulent 60s through the late 80s, Vanities celebrates the lives and loves of three best friends caught up in rapidly changing times.

Vanities was originally produced at TheatreWorks in Palo Alto in the summer of 2006. The critically acclaimed production was awarded two Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Awards for Outstanding Musical Production and Best Original Score, and was also showcased at the 2006 National Alliance for Musical Theatre (NAMT) Festival of New Musicals.

Other members of the creative team were to have included choreographer Dan Knechtges (Xanadu, Spelling Bee), Set Designer Anna Louizos (In the Heights, Curtains), Costume Designer Joe Aulisi (Charlies Angels), Lighting Designer Paul Miller (Legally Blonde), Sound Designer Tony Meola (Wicked), Music Director Carmel Dean (Spelling Bee) and Orchestrator Lynne Shankel (Cry-Baby).

Vanities producers are Junkyard Dog Productions and Bartner/Jenkins Entertainment.

The musical recently played a pre-Broadway engagement at the Pasadena Playhouse (Pasadena, California) from 22 Aug through to 28 Sep 2008.
