Uncle Vanya - Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard join cast

Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard have joined the cast of Classic Stage Company�s upcoming new production of Anton Chekhov�s Uncle Vanya, directed by Austin Pendleton, playing at Classic Stage Company from 17 Jan - 1 Mar 2009. Opening date is still to be announced.

Maggie Gyllenhaal (Yelena Adreevna) film credits include 'Sherrybaby' (Golden Globe nomination), 'Secretary' (Golden Globe nomination), 'The Dark Knight', 'Donnie Darko', 'Happy Endings' and 'World Trade Center,' among others. Off-Broadway she played 'Priscilla Ceiling' in Tony Kushner�s Homebody/Kabul, which played at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles (2003), and at Brooklyn Academy of Music (2004).

Peter Sarsgaard (Astrov) is currently making his Broadway debut in the Broadway production of The Seagull, as 'Trigorin', starring opposite Kristin Scott Thomas. Other stage work includes the Signature Theatre production of Lanford Wilson�s 'Burn This,' as well as 'Kingdom of Earth, 'opposite Cynthia Nixon. He film credits include 'Shattered Glass,' 'Boys Don�t Cry,' 'Kinsey,' 'Garden State,' 'Jarhead,' 'The Dying Gaul' and 'Rendition,' among others.

The real-life husband and wife duo join Denis O�Hare , Mamie Gummer, Louis Zorich, George Morfogen, Delphi Harrington and Cyrilla Baer.

Tony Award winner O�Hare (Take Me Out) last performed at CSC in Yasmina Reza�s 'A Spanish Play,' stars as 'Uncle Vanya,' the quintessential superfluous man, who wakes up one morning to discover he has wasted his life in the service of others, in Chekhov�s tragicomic masterpiece of dashed dreams, thwarted love and eternal longing.

Uncle Vanya will feature scenic design by Santo Loquasto, ostume design by Suzy Benzinger and lighting design by Jason Lyons.
