The current COVID-19 pandemic has certainly thrown the 2019-2020 Broadway season into disarray and many have begun to question how it will impact the forthcoming Awards season. Now that so many new Broadway productions have been forced to temporarily shutter before they have officially opened or even begun preview performances, the immediate future on the Great White Way is unclear.

The first official press release of an Awards ceremony postponement has now been issued, however, affecting The 76th Annual Theatre World Awards, which recognize 'Outstanding Broadway and Off-Broadway Debut Performances.'

Originally scheduled to be held on Monday, June 1 at the Circle in the Square Theatre, the ceremony will now take place in fall 2020, with an exact date to be announced soon.

Dale Badway, Theatre World Awards President commented: "In the interest of safety, the 2020 Theatre World Awards has been postponed. We hope to gather for our always spectacular evening sometime this fall. We are following governmental guidelines to practice social distancing, in hopes that our recipients, audiences, members, and friends stay well and healthy. At this critical time, all of us at the Theatre World Awards would like to focus on the care and well-being of everyone in our 'Theatre World' community and continue on with the awards tradition when appropriate."

Over the pond, the Society of London Theatre has also announced the cancellation of the 2020 Olivier Awards at the Royal Albert Hall, which was to be held on April 5, 2020.
