Written by Bathsheba Doran, The Mystery of Love and Sex is the story of four individuals whose lives remain inextricably intertwined over time. Charlotte (Gayle Rankin) and Jonny (Mamoudou Athie) are two college students and long-time friends since the age of 9. As their relationship turns romantic, over her parents' (Diane Lane and Tony Shalhoub) objections, an onslaught of truths about their past is unleashed, threatening not only their relationship with each other, but with their families as well.
Mamoudou Athie is currently starring Off-Broadway in 'Generations' at Soho Repertory Theatre. His recent regional work includes 'Hamlet' (Yale Rep), 'Becoming Sylvia', 'Tripoltania', and 'The Zoo Story' (Williamstown Theatre Festival).
Diane Lane's previous theatre credits include the New York Shakespeare Festival's productions of 'The Cherry Orchard' and 'Agamemnon' at the Vivian Beaumont Theater. Her other theater credits include 'Twelfth Night' (ART/Boston) and 'Sweet Bird of Youth' (Goodman Theatre/Chicago). She was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for her performance in the film 'Unfaithful'.
Gayle Rankin can currently be seen on Broadway in the Roundabout Theatre Company's production of 'Cabaret'. She has appeared Off-Broadway in 'Tribes' and Tony Kushner's 'The Illusion' for the Signature Theatre.
Tony Shalhoub was nominated for Tony Awards for his performances in Lincoln Center Theater's productions of 'Act One' and 'Golden Boy'. His Broadway credits include 'Lend Me A Tenor', 'Conversations With My Father', 'The Heidi Chronicles', and 'The Odd Couple'.
The Mystery of Love and Sex was commissioned by Lincoln Center Theater with a Berwin Lee New Play Commission.
