The Glass Menagerie to play final performance on May 21
Producers of the Broadway revival of Tennessee Williams' classic The Glass Menagerie, starring two-time Academy Award winner and Tony nominee Sally Field, have posted an early closure notice of May 21, 2017. Previews began at the Belasco Theatre on February 7, 2017, ahead of an official opening on March 9. The limited engagement was originally scheduled through to July 2, 2017.
The Glass Menagerie is directed by Tony winner Sam Gold, who previously staged this production with an entirely Dutch cast at Toneelgroep Amsterdam.
Synopsis: "Told as a memory play, The Glass Menagerie is introduced to the audience by Tom, the narrator and protagonist who tells of his mother Amanda and his sister Laura. Amanda is a faded Southern belle who shares an apartment with her son Tom and her daughter Laura in St. Louis. Laura has previously suffered from polio and walks with a limp, making her insecure of the world outside. Amanda becomes obsessed with finding a gentleman caller for her daughter who is unable to integrate into society and spends most of her time playing with her collection of glass animals."
The cast of The Glass Menagerie includes Sally Field (as Amanda Wingfield), two-time Tony Award-winning director Joe Mantello (as Tom Wingfield), "American Horror Story" star Finn Wittrock (as Jim O'Connor) and Madison Ferris (as Laura Wingfield), in her Broadway debut.
The creative team features scenic design by Andrew Lieberman, costume design by Woiceich Dziedzic, lighting design by Adam Silverman and sound design by Bray Poor.
The Glass Menagerie is produced on Broadway by Scott Rudin and Lincoln Center Theater.
Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie premiered in New York in 1945 and has since been revived on the Great White Way a total of six times - 1965, 1975, 1983, 1994, 2005 and most recently in 2013. Previous leading actresses in the role of Amanda Wingfiled have included Cherry Jones, Jessica Lange, and Maureen Stapleton.
Sally Field made her Broadway debut in 'The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?' at the John Golden Theatre in 2002. Her prolific screen career includes two Oscar-winning performances - "Places in the Heart" in 1985 and "Norma Rae" (1980) - along with an Oscar-nominated performane in "Lincoln" in 2013. She has also received a total of 2 Golden Globes and 9 further nominations. She has won three Emmys for TV roles in "Brothers & Sisters," "Sybil," and "ER," along with a further five Emmy nominations. Other notable screen credits include "Forrest Gump," "Mrs. Doubtfire," "Where the Heart Is," "Steel Magnolias," "Smokey and the Bandit," and "The Amazing Spider-Man" franchise, amongst many others.
