The Glass Menagerie: Recoups $2.6 million investment
The American Repertory Theatre's (A.R.T.) production of Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie has recouped its $2.6 million Broadway investment.
The show opened at Broadway's Booth Theatre on 26 Sep 2013, following previews from 05 Sep 2013. Originally scheduled to play a limited 17-week limited engagement through to 05 Jan 2014, the show announced a seven week extension in Oct 2013, and will now play its final performance on 23 Feb 2014.
The Glass Menagerie opened to excellent reviews: Stunning production (NY Times); Shattering and shimmering (NY Daily News); Smart, insightful and theatrically adventurous (Record); Essential theater (Hollywood Reporter).
The production, directed by John Tiffany, stars multiple Tony and Emmy Award-winner Cherry Jones (Doubt, "24") as 'Amanda Wingfield,' film and stage star Zachary Quinto ("American Horror Story ") in his Broadway debut as 'Tom,' two-time Tony-nominee Celia Keenan-Bolger (Peter and the Starcatcher) as 'Laura' and Brian J. Smith ("SGU Stargate Universe") as 'Jim,' the Gentleman Caller.
The Glass Menagerie is set in St Louis in the 1930s and follows the story of the Wingfield family and the troubled relationship between an aging, overbearing mother Amanda andher frail daughter Laura. It is told in recalled memories by Tom Wingfield, who is torn between his obligation to his mother and sister and his desire to break away from them.
The show features set and costume design by Bob Crowley, lighting by Natasha Katz and sound by Clive Goodwin.
The Glass Menagerie is the American Repertory Theatre's second production to transfer to Broadway this year. Their production of Stephen Schwartz's and Roger O. Hirson's musical 'Pippin,' is currnetly playing at Broadway's Music Box Theatre.
