Producers Stuart Thompson and Louise Gund have announced a Broadway transfer for Lynn Nottage's Sweat, directed by Kate Whoriskey, which has just finished its extended engagement at the Public's Martinson Theater.

Previews are scheduled to begin at Broadway's Studio 54 on 4 March 2017, before an official opening on 26 March.

Thompson and Gund released the following statement:

"We have been so proud and fortunate to follow Lynn Nottage's groundbreaking play Sweat before it opened at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. We have been in the front seat along the journey and are beyond delighted to allow New York audiences to see Lynn Nottage, one of our country's greatest playwrights, make her Broadway debut with this magnificent and pulse-inducing work."
Synopsis: "With warm humor and tremendous heart, Sweat tells the story of a group of friends who have spent their lives sharing drinks, secrets and laughs while working together on the line of a factory floor. But when layoffs and picket lines begin to chip away at their trust, the friends find themselves pitted against each other in the hard fight to stay afloat. The new play examines the collision of race, class, family and friendship, and the tragic, unintended costs of community without opportunity."

Although not yet officially confirmed, the Public Theater cast of Sweat are expected to return for the Broadway engagement. This includes (in alphabetical order) Carlo Alban (Oscar), James Colby (Stan), Khris Davies (Chris), Johanna Day (Tracey), John Earl Jelks (Brucie), Will Pullen (Jason), Miriam Shor (Jessie), Lance Coadie Williams (Evan) and Michelle Wilson (Cynthia).

The creative team behind Sweat features scenic design by John Lee Beatty, costume design by Jennifer Moeller, lighting design by Peter Kaczorowski, original music and sound design by Rob Milburn and Michael Bodeen, and projection design by Jeff Sugg.
