SpongeBob SquarePants musical on Broadway?

Rumours have been flying that a SpongeBob SquarePants musical may be headed to Broadway in the near future. Entertainment Weekly have reported that Nickelodeon have 'confirmed' that a musical version of their hit cartoon is currently in development, and may be looking to open on the Great White Way.

The score is rumoured to feature a mixture of classic and contemporary rockers from Aerosmith to Sara Bareilles, Lady Antebellum and John Legend. The network recently revealed the show's potential opening number, "Bikini Bottom Day," during the season upfronts on 25 February 2015. The only name attached to the project at this stage is director Tina Landau.

SpongeBob SquarePants, which debuted in 1999, is an American animated television series created by marine biologist and animator Stephen Hillenburg. Set in the fictional underwater city of Bikini Bottom, the series follows the adventures of the title character and his friends. A film adaptation was released in 2004, with a sequel released in America on 6 Feb 2015.

No timescale for the project has been announced.
