King Henry VIII was a Tudor monarch, ruling over England for nearly 40 years. During his time on the throne, he broke away from the Catholic Church and, even more famously, had six wives. While history lessons have taught us all about Henry VIII, they often spend little time on the wives, focusing mostly on how they died or else got rejected.

*SIX* on Broadway includes plenty of tongue-in-cheek jokes about their deaths and divorces, but it also includes firsthand accounts from the women themselves about what their lives, personalities, and talents are independent of Henry. You won’t get that in the history books — only on the Broadway stage. With a women-only cast (the Queens) and band (the Ladies in Waiting), *SIX* on Broadway puts female power and girlbosses on the map.

The show came out of humble beginnings in England, when creators Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss wrote it during their last year at Cambridge University. At the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland, *SIX* caught the attention of producers, and it went on to tour the U.K. and get a five-time Olivier Award-nominated run in London’s West End. The show went on to play Australia and tour the U.S., and *SIX* continues to reign on Broadway at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre.

In 2022, *SIX* on Broadway got eight Tony nominations, including Best Musical. The show won for Best Original Score and Best Costume Design, for Gabriella Slade’s Tudor-chic-meets-glitzy-popstar designs.

## What to watch for

- Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss weren’t the only people from the *SIX* team that first joined forces at the University of Cambridge. They met the musical director and lighting designer there, too.
- *SIX* is such a short musical because it was written for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, which has a time limit for productions. When *SIX* premiered there in 2018, 10,000 people saw the show in one month. 
- There’s a longstanding myth that Henry VIII wrote the English folk song “Greensleeves” for Anne Boleyn. It’s likely false, but the song is referenced in some of Anne’s *SIX* lyrics, and you’ll hear its melody played on the harpsichord when you walk into the theatre.
- The Queens wear different accessories depending on their fate. The divorced women both wear spiked headbands, and the beheaded ones wear chokers.
- Each wife leads her own musical number, but they come together for a techno rave group number, “Haus of Holbein.” See the queens dance in their neon ruff collars and glasses and get ready to “Get Down” with Anna of Cleves right afterward.
- Since the London *SIX* cast recording was released on Spotify in 2019, the songs have been streamed worldwide over 100 million times. In the space of just a few short years, Six grew from a small festival production to an international musical phenomenon, and like <a href="/show/hamilton">Hamilton</a>, the *Six* Broadway show has burst out of the theatre bubble and into the mainstream.

The Six musical features the testimonies of the six ex-wives of British royal tyrant Henry VIII — told by the Queens themselves at a modern-day girl group concert. They dispute who should be the lead singer of the group, agreeing it should be whoever received the poorest treatment from their former husband. The Queens battle it out with scintillating solos and a handful of gratifying group numbers to boot.

Each Queen is inspired by present-day pop divas. While Catherine of Aragon carries herself like Beyoncé, Anne Boleyn rocks out more like a "Sk8er Boi"-era Avril Lavigne. The smooth tones of an Adele-esque Jane Seymour contrast nicely with Anna of Cleves, who gives us her best Nicki Minaj. And while Katherine Howard brings us seduction à la Britney Spears, the survivor Catherine Parr rounds out the group with the gravitas of Alicia Keys.

Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss wrote Six at 21 years old during their final year at Cambridge University. Presented by Cambridge University Musical Theatre Society at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2017, this fresh new musical caught the attention of producers Kenny Wax and Global Musicals, who would bring Six to the Arts Theatre in London's West End in December of that year. Its success snowballed from there, spurred on by the release of the original cast recording in September 2018, which earned the show a global following. Six toured the U.K. and later returned to the West End for an open-ended run.

The "little show that could" was honored with five Olivier Award nominations in 2019, including Best Musical in a category that also included Come From Away, Fun Home, and Tina: The Tina Turner Musical.

Following a North American premiere in Chicago in May 2019, the U.S. cast toured to Cambridge, Massachusetts; Alberta, Canada; and St. Paul, Minnesota. The show shuttered temporarily on its would-be Broadway opening night in 2020, but its eventual 2021 premiere earned Six on Broadway eight Tony nominations and two wins, for Best Original Score and Best Costume Design of a Musical.

There is nothing I enjoy more than discovering a show and then going back to see it again (and again) with someone who has never seen it before. As someone who goes to the theatre for work, I view every night as a treasure hunt for the next theatrical crown jewel, and I love revisiting these gems time and again with friends and family.&nbsp;So when I saw a little show called <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/six">Six</a> for the first time in London's West End in 2019, I couldn't wait to evangelize about it and take everyone I know. When the show came to the U.S. for a North American tour before heading to Broadway, I took my brother and sister-in-law to the show at American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, Mass.&nbsp;And when the show was preparing for its March 2020 Broadway bow, I took a good friend, dancing in the aisles at the last show I saw before the pandemic shutdown.&nbsp;Now, the production is the first new musical to return to Broadway since theatres closed, and in the intervening time, I've actually moved to London, where I was at the musical's first performance back in the West End in May 2021. So being back in New York for Broadway's reopening and seeing Six (for the sixth time, no less) feels like a seminal moment for the show.&nbsp;This time, I also took a good friend, who also had never seen the show or heard any of the music. Watching her experience pure musical theatre elation for a pop-packed 75 minutes was greater than any returning-to-theatre joy I could have imagined. You'll laugh. You'll cry. You'll dance. It's everything a theatre experience should be and more.&nbsp;So what is Six, you might ask, oh uninitiated one? The show is essentially a pop concert featuring the six wives of&nbsp;Henry VIII belting and riffing about all the "bullsh*t" they had to put up with from the king. Featuring vocal stylings in the vein of Nicki Minaj, Adele, Ariana Grande, Beyoncé, and more, the performers deliver a "histo-remix," in a concise and endlessly catchy concert-style show that is part singing competition, part history lesson.&nbsp;Now, you don't need me to tell you how popular the music is, as the U.K. cast recording has been streamed over 100 million times, and writers Toby Moss and Lucy Marlow (also the show's co-director with Jamie Armitage) have scored a deal to write pop music. Not bad for two students at Cambridge who came up with this show in school and premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe.&nbsp;The queendom has now gone global, and the Broadway production is bigger, bolder, and beltier than any Six I've seen yet. From new riffs to surprise costume reveals, every element has been leveled up for New York, leaving no stone unturned. Adrianna Hicks (Catherine of Aragon), Andrea Macasaet (Anne Boleyn), Abby Mueller (Jane Seymour), Brittney Mack (Anna of Cleves), Samantha Pauly (Katherine Howard), and Anna Uzele (Catherine Parr) form a tight ensemble, fulfilling all your girl group dreams and your next karaoke night.&nbsp;The show itself is a retro-mashup with Gabrielle Slade's bedazzled costumes featuring Reformation-inspired silhouettes; Carrie-Anne Ingrouille's choreography showcases Tudor-meets-pop moves; and Emma Bailey's scenery and Tim Deiling's lighting feels like what a royal ballroom might look like in a techno disco.&nbsp;Ultimately, the queens' own stories of overcoming struggles and the show's circuitous journey to Broadway are also beacons for the power of positivity, perseverance, and coming together in times of struggle. Lena Horne Theatre - TodayTix

Designed by Herbert J. Krapp for the Chanin Brothers, the Lena Horne Theatre officially opened as the Mansfield Theatre in 1926. Between the years of 1933 and 1945, the venue fell into disuse until it was purchased by Michael Myerberg and subsequently leased to CBS for television productions under the name of CBS Studio 59.

In 1960, the building was renamed after the former New York Times theatre critic Brooks Atkinson. The Nederlander Organization acquired partial ownership in 1967 and full ownership in 1974.

The theatre was renamed in 2022 for Lena Horne, the Black performer and civil rights activist who was active on Broadway for nearly 50 years. The Lena Horne Theatre is the first Broadway venue to be named for a Black woman.
