Rock 'n' Roll to open on Broadway in the fall

Following a successful run in London�s West End, Rock 'n' Roll, a new play by Tom Stoppard, will open on Broadway at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on 4 Nov 2007, following previews from 19 Oct 2007. The premiere of Rock 'n' Roll marks the 40th anniversary since Stoppard was introduced to Broadway audiences with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead.

Members of the original London company; Brian Cox, Sinead Cusack and Rufus Sewell (winner of the Olivier, London Evening Standard and London Critics� Circle Awards for his performance), along with Nicole Ansari and Alice Eve, will appear in the Broadway production, which is to be directed by Trevor Nunn, who also helmed the London prduction.

Brian Cox's made his Broadway debut playing Edmund Darrell in Strange Interlude (1985 revival), he has also played Marc in Art (1998). Sinead Cusacks' made her Broadway debut in the RSC�s repertory of Cyrano (1984 revival) and Much Ado About Nothing (1984 revival), for which she received a Tony Award nomination. Rufus Sewell's made his Broadway debut playing Owen in Translations (1995). Both Nicole Ansari and Alice Eve are making their Broadway debuts.

Rock 'n' Roll received its world premiere at the Royal Court as part of their 50th Anniversary celebration and subsequently transferred to the Duke of York�s Theatre for a sold-out run.

Winner of the London Evening Standard and London Critics� Circle Theatre Awards for Best New Play, successful will be produced on Broadway by Sonia Friedman Productions, Bob Boyett, Ostar Enterprises, Roger Berlind and Tulbart Productions, in association with Lincoln Center Theater.

The drama received good notices from the London press: Nicholas De Jongh for The Evening Standard said, "This is not quite first-rate Stoppard but still ought to generate a big and serious stir." Paul Taylor for The Independent wrote, "Complex and moving new play about the link between rock music, East European dissidence and the fall of Communism...an impressive play" Michael Billington for The Guardian extolled, "Astonishing new play...excellent production." and Charles Spencer for The Daily Telegraph commented, "There is an energy, rawness and passion here one doesn't associate with the elegant and witty Stoppard."

Rock 'n' Roll spans the years from 1968 to 1990 from the double perspective of Prague, where a rock'n'roll band comes to symbolise resistance to the Communist regime, and of Cambridge where the verities of love and death are shaping the lives of three generations in the family of a Marxist philosopher.

Set design is by Robert Jones, costume design is by Emma Ryott, lighting design is by Howard Harrison and sound design by Ian Dickinson.

Stoppard was most recently represented on Broadway with the acclaimed Lincoln Center Theater production of The Coast of Utopia, which has received 10 Tony Award nominations, including Best Play, and has won the Drama Critics Circle, Outer Critics Circle and Drama League Awards for Best Play.
