New season of work announced at MCC Theater
Upcoming programming includes online livestreams, as well as staged productions billed for spring 2021.
UPDATE: Further details have been announced regarding the new play by Susan Soon He Stanton. Titled The Things Are Against Us, the play will star Juan Castano, Emily Davis, Susannah Flood, Babak Tafti and Danny Wolohan.
Executive director Blake West, along with MCC Theater's artistic directors have announced the upcoming shows as part of its newest season. Shows confirmed begin this week, with performances into the new year, including staged productions to a live audience.
All digital productions and readings will be available on MCC On Demand, the theater's streaming service which was announced last week.
"It's been a surprise and delight working with these incredible artists to explore new mediums for MCC audiences," said Will Cantler, Co-Artistic Director. "We are excited about the months ahead and the projects we are creating. Together, we are exploring what theater can be and will be, not just now, but always moving forward."
The season begins with "LiveLabs", with all plays clocking in at under 30 minutes. ¡Gárgola! by Omar Vélez Meléndez starts off the series on October 29, following a Puerto Rican community who witness paranormal activity. This is followed by Between the Two Humps on December 17, Halley Feiffer's new play adapting the Nativity story to ask whether it's really that important. Casting for Between The Two Humps is completed by Peppermint as Gabriel, Portia as God, Noah Robbins as Joseph and Kara Young as Mary.
Mfoniso Udofia's On Love will be presented, exploring the different types of love that humans feel. On Love will be available to stream from February 11.
Additional LiveLabs include Untitled Meditations on Love and Grieving by Mfoniso Udofia on January 21, a new play by Susan Soon He Stanton on February 25 and Rome and Ja'Net by Dominique Fishback.
As well as these short dramas, MCC will stage their new musical, Space Dogs. Van Hughes and Nick Blaemire's creation will star in their own show, to be presented at the Susan & Ronald Frankel Theater and livestreamed around the world.
MCC Theater plan to produce in-person productions of two works, both halted due to the Coronavirus pandemic. These include Jocelyn Bioh's Nollywood Dreams, which explores the Nigerian film industry and how African Americans are educated in soft by Donja R. Love.
