Matthew Broderick to star in Shining City off-Broadway

The Irish Repertory Theatre has announced its inaugural production for the opening of its new home at 32 West 22nd Street. Two-time Tony winner Matthew Broderick will star as John in Conor McPherson's drama Shining City, directed by Ciarán O'Reilly, which will begins previews on 17 May 2016, before an official opening on 9 June and a limited engagement through to 3 July 2016.

Joining Mr Broderick in the cast will be Billy Carter (Ian), Lisa Dwan (Neasa) and James Russell (Laurence).

Synopsis: "Shining City is a haunting play, dense with urban lives that brush against one another while never making contact. John is seeking help from Ian, a counselor, after the unexpected death of his wife. Though shaken by the loss, John is troubled by more than just grief; he has begun to see his wife's ghost in their home."

The creative team features original music by Ryan Rumery, scenic design by Charlie Corcoran, costume design by Martha Hally, and lighting design by Michael Gottlieb.

Shining City originally premiere at London's Royal Court Theatre in June 2004. It then transferred to Broadway's Biltmore Theatre and opened on 9 May 2006, receiving two Tony nominations, including Best Play. This Irish Repertory Theatre production marks the first New York revival of the play since that Broadway premiere.

Matthew Broderick was last seen on Broadway in A. R. Gurney's 'Sylvia.' Other Broadway credits include 'It's Only A Play,' 'Nice Work If You Can Get It,' 'The Odd Couple', 'You Can Count on Me' and 'The Producers'. He won his first Tony Award for 'Brighton Beach Memoirs', and his second for the 1995 revival of 'How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.' His most iconic film credits include 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off', 'The Cable Guy', 'Inspector Gadget' and 'The Stepford Wives.'
