'Lysistrata The Musical' at TADA! Theater
Mayhaps Productions presents Lysistrata, The Musical, a contemporary musical retelling of the classic anti-war comedy by Artistophanes (The Frogs) about a group of women who attempt to stop an unjust war by staging a sex strike.
With book, music & lyrics by Eleni Delopolus and direction & choreography by Caroline Altman, Lysistrata, The Musical runs from the 7 - 24 April 2005, with an opening set for the 11 Apr at TADA! Theatre
Set in the present day and featuring an eclectic score ranging from jazz to patter to musical theatre, Lysistrata, The Musical opens in Athens, Greece, as a group of soldiers leave their wives to go off to fight in a war with Sparta thats been raging for so long that no one can remember what it was about in the first place. Used to this ritual, the women go back to their housewife chores. Except for Lysistrata (Lizzie to her friends), who decides the time has come to end the war once and for all: she convinces every woman in Greece to withhold sex from the men until they stop fighting. Confusion and chaos ensue as the men in power try to thwart the womens schemes, the Spartan women get in on the action and the balance of power tilts dangerously.
Featured in the cast: David Abeles, Jamie Buxton, Amy Garson, Eleanore Gutwein, Paul Guyet, Rob McCaffrey, Scott E. Nabb, Steve Parmenter, Kevin Rockower, Tiffany Diane Smith, Heathe Stecklein and Libby Winters as Lysistrata. According to creator Eleni Delopolus, current world events inspired her to take action. Over the past few years my friends and I have watched this senseless war drag on and on. Naturally, weve protested, but sometimes protesting can feel useless and ineffective. Nothing ever seems to change. But ultimately the only thing we can do is to keep on attempting to raise the general consciousness. So here is my way of doing that, my own personal form of protest...to use the art form I know to open peoples eyes again to the possibility of change.
