Journey's End to close on 10 Jun 2007

Despite being nominated for Six Tony's, including Best Revival of a Play, director David Grindley's critically acclaimed production of R.C. Sheriff's World War I drama, Journey's End is to close early on Broadway. The play, which was booking to 1 Jul 2007, will close on 10 Jun 2007. When the show closes it will have played 15 previews and 125 regular performances.

Journey's End opened at the Belesco Theatre on 22 Feb 2007, following previews from 8 Feb 2007. The show opened to critical acclaim. The New York Times said "Waiting is the dynamic of Journeys End. But with a fine, largely American cast that keeps its characters anxieties on a taut leash, watching the waiting is anything but tedious."; The New York Daily News wrote "As heavenly as it is haunting" ; Bloomberg printed "Who says perfection is not within human reach? Go see 'Journey's End' and learn otherwise." and the Hollywood Reporter said it was "Theater at its finest."

However, despite the excellent reviews Journey's End has struggled at the Box office with house capacity rarely going above 25%.

Director David Grindley also helmed the 75th annivarsary production of the play, which ran in London from Jan 2004 to Feb 2005. That too received positive reviews. The Evening Standard said, "Still comes at you with such galloping power and poignancy."; The Independent printed, "Deeply affecting revival."; The Guardian wrote, "Works powerfully on our emotions."; The Daily Telegraph called it a "Magnificent play."; The Times wrote "Gripping."; and The Financial Times said, "It is as compelling, as moving, as anything in London theatre today."

Set against the background of life in the trenches during World War One, Journey's End is based on the author's own experience of the Front. It follows a group of officers behind British lines at St Quentin, France, who await their fate on the front line.

The Broadway cast of Journey's End features Hugh Dancy, Boyd Gaines, Jefferson Mays, Stark Sands, ohn Ahlin, Nick Berg Barnes, John Behlmann, Justin Blanchard, Kieran Campion, John Curless & Richard Poe.

Set and costume dsign by Jonathan Fensom, with lighting by Jason Taylor and sound by Gregory Clarke.

Journey's End received 2007 Tony nominations for Best Revival of a Play, Best Performance By a Leading Actor in a Play (Boyd Gaines), Best Performance By a Featured Actor in a Play (Stark Sands), Best Direction of a Play (David Grindley), Best Scenic Design of a Play (Jonathan Fensom) and Best Lighting Design of a Play (Jason Taylor).
