Festive Shows for the 2017 Holiday Season

We take a look at some of the jolliest shows on offer in New York City over the Holidays...

Another Thanksgiving has come and gone and after consuming a veritable feast, I personally gave thanks for the Broadway premiere of The Band's Visit. But now it's time to look ahead as December 25 will be upon us quicker than a shake of a reindeer's tail! If you're looking for a festive treat for yourself, for a loved one or even for the entire family, here are a few of our suggestions to make the season bright this year:

Christmas Spectacular starring The Radio City Rockettes

Celebrating an astonishing 90th Anniversary at New York City's iconic Radio City Music Hall, the Rockettes are back with the show that is Christmas personified (complete with dozens and dozens of sparkling, high-kicking legs!). Christmas Spectacular continues to evolve with the inclusion of the latest state-of-the-art technology such as a 3D ride on Santa's sleigh through Manhattan or drone-style snowflake beach balls. But it's the traditional aspects of the show ("The Sugarplum Fairy" and "The Nutcracker", anyone?) that remain nostalgic favorites of grandparents and create enchanted, lasting memories for the youngsters in the audience. And look out for cameo appearances by real sheep, donkeys and even camels during the Nativity scene! Christmas Spectacular is a must, if you've never experienced this Winter Wonderland before, and for those brimming with Christmas spirit, it is a welcome return destination for families each and every year.

Christmas Spectacular starring The Radio City Rockettes Tickets are available now for performances through to January 1, 2018.

Elf - The Musical

Everyone's favorite Elf is heading back to the Big (Toffee) Apple! Yes, folks, Buddy and friends will be spreading festive cheer once again, as the Theater at Madison Square Garden hosts a special limited engagement of the Holiday favorite Elf - The Musical... And it is definitely the most "Sparklejollytwinklejingley" show in town! Based on the hit 2003 comedy film which starred Will Ferrell, the musical adaptation of Elf has been entertaining audiences since its Broadway premiere in 2010, most notably with a return Broadway engagement in 2012 and a West End premiere in 2015. And now "The Story of Buddy the Elf" will be told in the massive 5,500-seat MSG venue. Adding even more sparklejollytwinkejingley-ness to the occasion is the fact that - in quite the casting coup - "Cheers" star and original Broadway cast member George Wendt will be reprising his role as Santa Claus at this revival! (Who said "Nobody Cares About Santa"?!!) Elf - The Musical continues to establish itself as a modern classic.

Elf - The Musical Tickets are available for performances from December 13 to 29, 2017.

Home for the Holidays

If Christmas concerts are more your cup of eggnog, I mean cup of tea, then why not head down to the August Wilson Theatre on Broadway and join the cast of Home for the Holidays? Boasting a trio of Realtity TV winners as headliners, the majority of the vocals are provided by Candice Glover (winner of "American Idol" Season 12), Josh Kaufman (winner of "The Voice" Season 6), and Bianca Ryan (winner of "America's Got Talent" Season 1). They are backed up by YouTube sensations Peter Hollens & Evynne Hollens, whilst special cameo appearances are made by Academy Award nominee Danny Aiello. They've even thrown in "The Bachelorette" Season 11 star Kaitlyn Bristowe as your host, for good measure. The songs range from classic carols such as "O Come, All Ye Faithful," "O Holy Night," "The First Noel," and "Joy to the World" to more modern, toe-tapping offerings like "All I Want For Christmas Is You" and "A New York City Christmas". Whatever your musical taste buds crave this time of the year, Home for the Holidays is sure to have a tune or two that is right up your snow-covered street!

Home for the Holidays Tickets are available now for performances through to December 30, 2017.

Who's Holiday!

And now for something completely different! If you're looking for something a little less traditional than Christmas Spectacular and a little more adult than Elf - The Musical, then why not treat yourself to an evening with Olivier Award winner and Broadway favorite Lesli Margherita and find out what exactly happened to sweet, little Cindy Lou Who from Dr. Seuss' classic "How The Grinch Stole Christmas". Why is she now living all on her lonesome in a trailer on Mount Crumpit? Why is she swigging back booze like it's going out of fashion, experimenting with illegal substances and blurting out curse words that would turn anyone's cheeks as red as Rudolph's nose? Well, thanks to Matthew Lombardo's new comedy in rhyming couplets, now playing at Off-Broadway's Westside Theatre, we learn over the course of around 60 minutes just how Cindy Lou's life has plummeted downhill after that first fateful encounter with The Grinch. Parents be warned though, the kids should be left at home for this one.

Who's Holiday! Tickets are available now for performances through to December 31, 2017.

So we hope our little festive round-up has warmed the cockles of your hearts and that these shows may bring you a little joy over the next few weeks... regardless of whether you're on the "Naughty" or the "Nice" list this year!
