Breakfast at Tiffany's: George Wendt joins cast

George Wendt ("Cheers") will play 'Joe Bell' in the world premiere of Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning playwright Richard Greenberg's new stage adaptation of Truman Capote's novella Breakfast at Tiffany's, directed by Sean Mathias.

Wendt will join the previously announced Emilia Clarke (HBO's "Game of Thrones") who is making her Broadway debut in the iconic role of 'Holly Golightly,' and Cory Michael Smith who is makling his Broadway debut starring as 'Fred.'

The play will open at the Cort Theatre on 20 Mar 2013, following previews from 03 Mar 2013.

Breakfast at Tiffany's is set in New York City in 1943. 'Fred', a young writer from Louisiana, meets Holly Golightly (Clarke), a charming, vivacious and utterly elusive good-time girl. Everyone falls in love with Holly - including Fred. But Fred is poor, and Holly's other suitors include a playboy millionaire and the future president of Brazil. As war rages on in Europe, Holly begins to fall in love with Fred - just as her past catches up with her.

The creative team for Truman Capote's Breakfast at Tiffany's includes sets by Derek McLane, costumes byColleen Atwood, lighting by Peter Kaczorowski and sound design by Rob Milburn & Michael Bodeen.

Breakfast at Tiffany's is being produced on Broadway by Colin Ingram Productions Limited, Donovan Mannato and Dominic Ianno.

In 1961 Paramount Pictures relased a movie adaptation of Truman Capote's Breakfast at Tiffany's starring Audrey Hepburn as 'Holly Golightly' for which she was nominated for an Oscar Award. The movie featured a screenplay by George Axelrod and was directed by Blake Edwards.


Emilia Clarke (Holly Golightly) recently shot to fame for her role as "Daenerys Targaryen" in the HBO television series "Game of Thrones." Other TV and film credits include: "Doctors," "Triassic Attack" and "Spike Island." She is soon to begin filming UK feature "Dom Hemingway" opposite Jude law and Richard E. Grant.

Cory Michael Smith (Fred) currently appears Off-Broadway in the NY premiere of Samuel D. Hunter's 'The Whale.' He recently starred in the U.S. Premiere of Mike Bartlett's 'Cock' (The Duke on 42nd Street), and the NY premiere of The 'Shaggs: Philosophy of the World' (Playwrights Horizons/New York Theatre Workshop).

George Wendt (Joe Bell) his best known for his role as 'Norm' in the TV sitcom "Cheers," for which he was nominated for six Emmy Awards. Broadway Credits include: 'Elf,' 'Art,' and 'Hairspray.' His most recently appeared as 'Dean Halsey' in 'Re-Animator The Musical' in Los Angeles, the New York Musical Festival and Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Richard Greenberg (Playwright) is the author of 'Take Me Out' (Tony Award for Best Play), which received an acclaimed production on Broadway after successful runs at The Donmar on London's West End and The Public Theater in New York City. Other works include 'The House in Town,' 'The Violet Hour,' 'The Dazzle,' 'Everett Beekin,' 'Three Days of Rain' (Pulitzer finalist; Olivier Award nomination), 'Hurrah At Last,' 'Night and Her Stars,' 'The American Plan,' 'Life Under Water' and 'The Author's Voice,' among many other plays. His adaptation of Strindberg's 'Dance of Death' was seen on Broadway starring Ian McKellen, Helen Mirren, and David Straithairn. He is writing the book for a musical version of Todd Haynes's film 'Far From Heaven.' Greenberg received the Oppenheimer Award.

Sean Mathias (Director) helmed Samuel Adamson's adaptation of Truman Capote's Breakfast at Tiffany's which played at the Haymarket, Theatre Royal in London's West End from 9 Sep 2009 - 9 Jan 2010. His West End credits include: 'Ring Round the Moon,' 'Aladdin,' 'Dance of Death,' 'Anthony and Cleopatra,' 'Marlene,' 'A Little Night Music' and 'Design for Living.' Mathias was nominated for a Tony Award for his direction of 'Indiscretions.' His other Broadway credits are 'Marlene,' 'Dance of Death' and 'The Elephant Man.'
