‘& Juliet’ to play pre-Broadway engagement in Toronto
The jukebox musical features hits by Britney Spears, Ariana Grande and the Backstreet Boys.
A pre-Broadway engagement for the West End musical & Juliet is scheduled to take place in 2022. & Juliet will begin performances at the Ed Mirvish Theatre in Toronto, Canada from summer 2022, ahead of a potential Broadway transfer.
Inspired by Shakespeare's tragedy, & Juliet follows the life of Juliet if she didn't die, instead travelling to Paris. & Juliet is a jukebox musical featuring songs written by Max Martin, a multi-award-winning songwriter whose songs include "Roar," "Stronger" and "It's My Life."
& Juliet won three Olivier Awards in 2020, and was also nominated for best new musical. In an & Juliet review for LondonTheatre.co.uk, "This likeable and sometimes spectacular production - directed by Luke Sheppard and choreographed by Jennifer Weber with vigour and discipline, gives [songs] a full-bodied and full-blooded outing. Frequently resembling a series of pop videos come to life - thanks to performance platforms that come out of the floor, or benches that take on an aerial life of their own in Soutra Gilmour's sets, aided by Andrzej Goulding's dazzling projections - it is performed with a glinting knowingness and powerful pop theatre voices."
& Juliet features a book by David West Read, who is best known for writing the Canadian sitcom Schitt's Creek. Luke Sheppard directs, with choreography by Jennifer Weber, scenic design by Soutra Gilmour and costume design by Paloma Young.
The upcoming season also includes Come From Away, Jesus Christ Superstar, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and the North American premiere of Leopoldstadt. Tom Stoppard's Leopoldstadt began performances in London in 2020, winning best new play at the 2020 Olivier Awards.
