True West, starring Ethan Hawke & Paul Dano, begins performances on Broadway

The Roundabout Theatre Company revival of Sam Shepard's True West is set for an official opening at the American Airlines Theatre on January 24, 2019.

Roundabout Theatre Company's eagerly anticipated revival of Sam Shepard's True West, starring Oscar & Tony Award nominee Ethan Hawke & Golden Globe nominee Paul Dano, begins previews at Broadway's American Airlines Theatre tonight. An official opening is scheduled for January 24, with the limited engagement running through to March 17, 2019.

Synopsis: "Opposites attack in Sam Shepard's Pulitzer Prize-nominated play about two brothers with more in common than they think. Holed up in their mother's California house, screenwriter Austin (Mr. Dano) and lowlife Lee (Mr. Hawke) wrestle with big issues—and each other. Order vs. chaos. Art vs. commerce. Typewriter vs. toaster...Shepard's rip-roaring classic returns to Broadway, gleefully detonating our misguided myths of family, identity and the American Dream."

Joining Mr. Hawke (as Lee) and Mr. Dano (as Austin) on stage are Drama Desk Award winner Marylouise Burke (as Mom) and Obie Award winner Gary Wilmes (as Saul Kimmer).

Under the direction of James Macdonald, the creative team behind True West features scenic design by Mimi Lien, costume design by Kaye Voyce, and lighting design by Jane Cox.

The RTC production marks the first-ever Broadway revival of True West, which originally premiered on Broadway at the Circle in the Square Theatre in March 2000 and received four Tony Award nominations.

Ethan Hawke and Paul Dano have previously collaborated together both on stage and screen. The pair acted alongside each other in the film "Taking Lives" and Mr. Hawke also directed Mr. Dano on stage in a production of Things We Want.

Ethan Hawke received a Tony Award nomination in 2007 for his performances as Michael Bakunin in the 3-part play The Coast of Utopia. He has also appeared on Broadway in The Seagull (1992-93), Henry IV (2003-4), and in the title role of Macbeth (2013-14). His most notable screen credits in his prolific career include Oscar-nominated turns in "Training Day" and "Boyhood," the role of Jesse in the film trilogy "Before Sunrise," "Before Sunset," and "Before Midnight," as well as roles in "Gattaca," "Assault on Precinct 13," "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead," "Sinister," "Reality Bites," "Dead Poets Society," and the title role in the 2000 film adaptation of "Hamlet".

Paul Dano has previously appeared on Broadway in A Free Man of Color (2010-11), Inherit the Wind (1996), and in A Month in the Country (1995), making his Broadway debut at the age of 10. On screen, he received a Golden Globe nomination in 2016 for "Love & Mercy" and earned a BAFTA nomination in 2008 for "There Will Be Blood". He is also known for his performances in "12 Years a Slave," "Prisoners," and "Little Miss Sunshine".

True West Tickets are available now for performances through to March 17, 2019.
