2020 Oscar nominees include Cynthia Erivo, Adam Driver and more Broadway alumni

The 92nd Academy Awards ceremony will be held on February 9 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

The New York Theatre Guide would like to take this opportunity to congratulate a whole host of Broadway alumni who were honored this morning for their work on the silver screen.

Notable names that Broadway fans may recognize include Tony Award winner Cynthia Erivo, who starred as Celie in the 2015 Broadway revival of The Color Purple. Erivo received two Oscar nominations this morning and would become the youngest ever EGOT winner if she triumphs at this year's ceremony. She was nominated in the category of 'Actress in a Leading Role' for her performance in the titular role of "Harriet," as well as in the category of 'Music (Original Song)' for co-writing "Stand Up" from the film's soundtrack.

Tony Award nominee Adam Driver, who has starred on Broadway three times in the past decade including his Tony-nominated turn in the 2019 revival of Lanford Wilson's Burn This, received a nod in the category of 'Actor in a Leading Role' for his performance in "Marriage Story". Driver finds himself in a category with two-time Tony Award winner Jonathan Pryce, who recently returned to Broadway in The Height of the Storm, for Netflix's "The Two Popes," as well as Tony Award nominee Antonio Banderas (Nine, 2003) for his performance in "Pain and Glory".

Congratulations also go to Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, currently represented on the Great White Way by Disney's Frozen, for penning the hit song "Into the Unknown" for the movie sequel "Frozen II" - another contender in the 'Music (Original Song)' category. Tony Award winner Elton John also received a nomination in this category for co-writing "(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again" from his musical biopic "Rocketman".

In addition, Tony Award-winning director and producer Sam Mendes, who helms the Broadway transfer of The Lehman Trilogy this season, also picked up a nod for 'Best Director' thanks to the epic World War I drama "1917" and in the category of 'Writing (Original Screenplay)' for co-writing the script.

Other notable Broadway alumni that found themselves on the list of this year's nominees this morning include Tony Award nominee Tom Hanks for his portrayal of Mr. Rogers in "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood," two-time Tony Award winner Al Pacino for "The Irishman," Tony Award winner Anthony Hopkins for "The Two Popes," Tony Award nominee Kathy Bates for "Richard Jewell," Tony Award winner Scarlett Johansson for "Jojo Rabbit," and Tony Award nominee Saoirse Ronan for "Little Women".

Finally, a special mention goes to Renée Zellweger who was nominated in the catgory of 'Actress in a Leading Role' for her turn as Judy Garland, an icon of Hollywood's golden era of musicals. "Judy" was adapted for the silver screen from Peter Quilter's Broadway play End of the Rainbow.
