Wonderland to close on 15 May

The Broadway premiere of the musical Wonderland will play its final performance at thr Marquis Theatre on 15 May 2011, just four weeks after opening. When the show closes it will have performed 31 previews and just 33 regular performances.

Wonderland opened at the Marquis Theatre on 17 Apr 2011, following previews from 21 Mar 2011, and was selling tickets through to 20 Nov 2011.

The musical opened to mostly poor reviews: All spectacle with no cleverness and no heart beat (newyorktheatreguide); Flat (NY Post); Awful in every way (The Record); Hummable, cheerful fairy tale (Bllomberg) Fun-free & charm-challenged (Hollywood Reporter); "A distinct lack of wonder" (Variety).

Wonderland stars Janet Dacal as 'Alice,' Darren Ritchie as 'Jack the White Knight,' E. Clayton Cornelious as 'Caterpillar,' Jose Llana as 'El Gato,' Karen Mason as 'The Queen of Hearts,' Kate Shindle as 'The Mad Hatter,' Carly Rose Sonenclar as 'Chloe,' Edward Staudenmayer as 'The White Rabbit' and Danny Stiles as 'Morris the March Hare.'

The book is by Gregory Boyd and Jack Murphy, lyrics by Jack Murphy, music by Frank Wildhorn, choreography by Marguerite Derricks and direction by Gregory Boyd.

The design team is comprised of Neil Patel (set), Susan Hilferty (costume), Paul Gallo (lighting), Peter Hylenski (sound) and Sven Ortel (video and projection).

In this new musical featuring a new score, Wonderland is a story about a new Alice who has lost her joy in life. Estranged from her husband, alienated from her daughter and in danger of losing her career, Alice finds herself in Wonderland where she encounters strange though familiar characters that help her rediscover the wonder in her life while searching for her daughter.

Wonderland is produced on Broadway by the David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts (Judy Lisi, President and CEO), William Franzblau and Nederlander Presentations, Inc.

Wonderland is the first production of the Broadway Genesis Project, an initiative by the Straz Center for the Performing Arts to develop and prepare new musical theater for Broadway.
