Wit: Cynthia Nixon returning to Broadway

Tony and Emmy Award winner Cynthia Nixon will star in Manhattan Theatre Club's (MTC) Broadway premiere of the Margaret Edson's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Wit, directed by Lynne Meadow.

Wit will open at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on 26 Jan 2012, following previews from 5 Jan, and play a limited engagement through to 4 Mar 2012.

Wit follows a brilliant and exacting poetry professor (Nixon) as she undergoes experimental treatment for cancer. A scholar who devoted her life to academia, she must now face the irony and injustice of becoming the subject of research.

Nixon returns to Manhattan Theatre Club following her Tony Award-winning performance in David Lindsay-Abaire's 'Rabbit Hole.' In addition to 'Rabbit Hole,' her Broadway credits include: 'The Women,' 'The Last Night of Ballyhoo,' 'Indiscretions' (Tony nom.) 'Angels in America: Perestroika,' 'The Heidi Chronicles,' 'Hurlyburly,' 'The Real Thing' and 'The Philadelphia Story.'

Nixon earned her first Emmy as 'Miranda Hobbes' in the HBO series "Sex and the City," and a second Emmy for her guest starring role on "Law & Order: SVU." She can currently be seen in Showtime's TV series "The Big C," opposite Laura Linney.

Wit had its New York premiere in 1998 playing Off-Broadway for over 500 performances from 6 Oct 1998 - 9 Apr 2000. The show garnered the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and was named Best Play by the New York Drama Critic Circle, the Drama Desk Awards, the Outer Critics Circle Awards, the Drama League, and the Lucille Lortel Awards.

Additional casting, creative team, and other listings information for the Broadway premiere of Wit will be announced in the coming weeks.

Tickets will go on sale to the general public on 6 Sep 2012.

MTC's upcoming world premiere of David Auburn's The Columnist, which had been previously announced for January dates, will now begin previews the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on 3 Apr 2012 and open on 25 Apr 2012.
