Will Kiss of the Spider Woman return to Broadway?
According to The New York Times, an industry reading was held earlier this month for a potential revival of Kander & Ebb's musical Kiss of the Spider Woman. John Tiffany directed a stellar cast, which included six-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald in the title role, alongside Tony winner Alan Cumming as Luis Alberto Molina and Steven Pasquale as Valentin Arregui Paz.
Producer Tom Kirdahy commented:
"I think everyone is interested in having further conversations, but there is no game plan for a production at this point."
We can but hope...
Kiss of the Spider Woman features music and lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb and a book by Terrence McNally, spouse of Producer Tom Kirdahy. It premiered under the direction of Harold Prince in London's West End at the Shaftesbury Theatre on 20 October 1992, before opening at Broadway's Broadhurst Theatre on 3 May 1993. It received an impressive total of seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Actor for Brent Carver and Best Actress for Chita Rivera.
Synopsis: "Kiss of the Spider Woman explores the relationship between Luis Alberto Molina and Valentin Arregui Paz, two prisoners in a Latin American country jail. Luis, a window dresser, mentally escapes captivity through fantasizing movies and the diva Aurora, whose many roles include a spider woman with a lethal kiss."
