Wicked: Miriam Margolyes makes her broadway debut

 

Stage and screen actress Miriam Margoyles makes her Broadway debut as Madame Morrible in the musical Wicked this evening (22 Jan 2008), she will assume the role from Carole Shelley who played her final show performance on 20 Jan 2008. Ms. Margolyes originated the role of Madame Morrible in the London production of the musical.

Miriam Margoyles is known to many for her perofrmance as Professor Sprout in 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets'. In 1994 she won the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Mrs Mingott in Martin Scorsese's 'The Age of Innocence.' Recent films also include 'Ladies in Lavender,' 'The Life and Death of Peter Sellers' and 'Happy Feet.' TV credits include 'Black Adder.'

Margoyles' London Theatre credits include playing George in 'The Killing of Sister George' and Mrs. Hardcastle in 'She Stoops to Conquer.' TV credits include 'Black Adder.' Margoyles has just performed her one-woman show, 'Dickens' Women', throughout Australia and New Zealand to critical acclaim. In 2002, Miriam was awarded an OBE for her services to drama.

Margoyles joins a cast which currently includes Stephanie J. Block as Elphaba, Annaleigh Ashford as Glinda, Lenny Wolpe as The Wizard, David Burnham as Fiyero, Cristy Candler as Nessarose, Logan Lipton as Boq, and Steven Skybell as Dr. Dillamond.

Wicked opened at the Gershwin Theatre on the 30 Oct 2003, following previews from 8 Oct 2003, and is currently booking through to 23 Nov 2008.

Long before Dorothy drops in, two other girls meet in the land of Oz. One, born with emerald-green skin, is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. Wicked tells the story of their remarkable odyssey, how these two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch.

Wicked has music & lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, book by Winnie Holzman, based on the novel by Gregory Maguire.

The musical is directed by Joe Mantello, with choreography by James Lynn Abbott, scene design by Eugene Lee, costumes by Susan Hilferty, lighting by Kenneth Posner and sound by Tony Meola.
