'Weather Girl' to play off Broadway as part of St Ann's Warehouse season
Challengers star Mike Faist and Michelle Williams will star in Eugene O'Neill's Anna Christie as part of the season, which also includes Weather Girl and Flaming September.
Soho Theatre hit Weather Girl will have its North American premiere at St. Ann's Warehouse, alongside a new production of Anna Christie starring Michelle Williams and Mike Faist, as part of the venue's 2025-26 fall season.
Brian Watkins's Weather Girl kicks off the season, running September 16–October 12. Produced by Francesca Moody Productions (behind Fleabag and Baby Reindeer), the show sees Julia McDermott play Stacey, a California weather girl, who is oversexed and underpaid. In this apocalyptic comedy, Stacey's shiny demeanour cracks in the face of environmental collapse. Tyne Rafaeli directs.
In a five-star review for LondonTheatre.co.uk, the critic said: "It’s been some while since I’ve come across a play so fully destined to haunt my sleep."
Watkins said of Weather Girl, "I wanted to write a love letter to California, one that embraced all its strangeness and beauty, exploring the gonzo feeling of being detached from the environment. What came out was a runaway train of a play that aims to laugh into the dark. It's an invitation to join our heroine into some unexpected, if not unthinkable, places. At its heart, the play sets out to investigate a core question of why we wreck the places we love."
Moody said, “I am thrilled to be bringing this scorching black comedy to St. Ann’s Warehouse and have the opportunity to share it with New York. Weather Girl is not just a brilliant play but a powerful statement. It could not feel more timely or relevant. It’s a sucker punch, a reality check, and a good night out all at once.”
Flaming September, created and performed by Justin Vivian Bond, is a tribute to Marianne Faithfull, who performed and recorded her comeback concert and record, Blazing Away, at the Church of St. Ann & the Holy Trinity. The show will run at the church from September 24–28.
Meanwhile, Eugene O’Neill's Anna Christie sees five-time Oscar nominee Michelle Williams take on one of the boldest roles in the American canon as a reformed prostitute searching for her father. This new production will also star Challengers actor Mike Faist. The creative team includes Tony Award-winning director Thomas Kail, movement by Steven Hoggett, music by Nicholas Britell, set design by Christine Jones and Brett Banakis, costume design by Paul Tazewell, lighting design by Natasha Katz, and sound design by Nevin Steinberg.
St. Ann’s Warehouse Artistic Director Susan Feldman said, “It’s a thrill to be working with artists and producers of this caliber, playing at the top of their game this season at St. Ann’s Warehouse. True innovators all, no one is flinching, but rather harnessing the greater good with unbounded hope and creativity. We’re excited to return to our roots at St. Ann’s Church for a dose of the sacred to bolster the charge.”
