Wanda's Monster to play Off-Broadway
The family musical Wanda's Monster, which played at Off-Off-Broadway' Theatre 3 earlier this year, is to receive a commercial Off-Broadway engagement. The musical will open at The Vineyard's Dimson Theatre on 21 Jul 2013, following previews from 13 Jul, and run through to 08 Sep 2013.
Wanda's Monster tells the story of Wanda, a young girl who is afraid there is a monster in her bedroom closet. The only person who believes Wanda is her Granny, who tells her that it must be terribly sad to be a monster living alone in a dark closet. Wanda, still afraid, now seeks to make life better for the fuzzy purple monster hiding in her closet, and in doing so learns a valuable lesson in acceptance and friendship.
The show features music and lyrics by singer, songwriter and children's recording artist Laurie Berkner, and a book by Barbara Zinn Krieger, based on Eileen Spinelli's children's book of the same name.
Directed by Adrienne Kapstein the cast will feature Laura Hankin (Wanda), James M. Ortiz (Monster) and Jamie Kolnick (Granny), with further casting to be announced.
The production team for Wanda's Monster features sets by Drew Francis, costumes by Leslie Bernstein, lighting by Ariel Benjamin and sound by Charles Coes.
The musical is being produced Off-Broadway by Making Books Sing, the non-profit and theatre company that commissioned the musical and presented it off-off-Broadway earlier this season.
