Tovarich, presented by Musicals Tonight at the McGinn/Cazale Theatre
Musicals Tonight presents Tovarich, at the McGinn/Cazale Theatre from 28 Oct - 9 Nov 2008.
Tovarich: In the 1920s, the Russian Revolution provided Paris with doormen, janitors, and taxi drivers made up of exiled Russian nobility. The Duchess Tatiana and her consort, Prince Mikail, do not work at all. Their poverty is voluntary because the late Tsar gave them 4 billion francs for safekeeping.
Cabaret performer Natalia warns they are being followed by a Russian spy and suggests that they become servants in the home of her generous American 'friend,' Charles Davis. He is in Paris with his wife and their two teen-age children. The only servant they have been able to keep is delighted to have help as are the children who become quite smitten with the two White Russians.
Davis hosts a dinner party at which he outlines a scheme to form an oil cartel and the eager international participants, also include a high Soviet official. The guests recognize the maid and butler, and embarrassment is followed by near-violence.
Directed by Thomas Sabella-Mills, Tovarich features Jackson Ross Best, Jeffrey Nauman, Barbara McCullough, Al Pagano, Laura Beth Wells, Paul Amodeo, Steve Ted Beckler, S Horey Walker, Dana Domenick, Ronald Hornsby, Lydia Gladstone, Amy Jackson, Robert Anthony Jones, Omer Shaish and Roger Rifkin.
Tovarich has music by Lee Pockriss, with book by David Shaw and lyrics by Anne Croswell
The musical played on Broadway in 1963, Vivien Leigh won a Tony for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance as 'Tatiana.' The production was directed by Peter Glenville and choreographed by Herbert Ross.
