The Wiz back on Broadway for the 2016-2017 season?
Good news for fans of the 1975 Broadway musical The Wiz! It has been reported that both a live NBC telecast and a Broadway revival production are in the works.
The live broadcast is set to take place on 3 December 2015 on NBC, with the Great White Way production expected at some point during the 2016-2017 season. Perhaps even more exciting is the prospect that the world famous Cirque du Soleil will co-produce both the TV event and subsequent Broadway show through its newly creared stage theatrical division.
Tony Award winner Kenny Leon has also been announced as the director for both the TV and stage versions, along with Tony winner Harvey Fierstein, who will write new material especially for the projects' book.
Charlie Smalls and William F. Brown's musical The Wiz first premiered on Broadway in 1975 and went on to win seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Due to its huge success, a film adaptation was also released in 1978, which starred Diana Ross and Michael Jackson. A short-lived revival took place in 1984 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, and again as part of New York City Center's Encores! in 2009, starring Ashanti.
The Wiz is a 1970's take on the classic L. Frank Baum story 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,' but with "a rock-filled revamp." Charlie Smalls' score includes "Ease on Down the Road," "No Bad News" and "Home."
Casting, theatre and dates information are yet to be confirmed.
