The Philadelphia Story: Alex Timbers to direct

Roundabout Theatre Company have announced a new Broadway production of The Philadelphia Story, a comedy by Philip Barry, directed by two-time Tony Award-nominee Alex Timbers ('Peter and the Starcatcher' and 'Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson').

The revival will play a limited engagement at the American Airlines Theatre in the fall of 2013.

The cast and creative team will be announced soon.

The Philadelphia Story is a comedy of romance and manners set in Philadelphia high society during the late 1930's.

Spoiled and snobby socialite Tracy Lord applies her impossibly high ideals to everyone but herself. Tracy is about to marry a stuffy executive when her congenial ex-husband arrives to protect his former father-in-law from a potentially scandalous tabloid expose. As her wedding day arrives Tracy is throwing into a dizzying state of premarital jitters by her ex-husbands arrival.

The Philadelphia Story premiered on Broadway in 1939 starring Katherine Hepburn and following its successful run, was made into the well-known, and Academy Award nominated, 1940 film also starring Hepburn, with Cary Grant and James Stewart.

The play was last seen on Broadway in 1981 starring Blythe Danner, Frank Converse and Edward Herrmann, with direction by Robert B. Sinclair.

Alex Timbers returns to Roundabout following his Roundabout Underground debut with 'The Language of Trees' in 2008.
