The Milliner at East 13th Street Theater
The Directors Company presents The Milliner, by Suzanne Glass, opeing at East 13th Street Theater on 1 Nov 2006, following previews from 24 Oct and running through to 17 Dec 2006.
The Milliner tells the story of Wolfgang, talented creator of hats. As a Jew on trial in Germany after the end of the Second World War, Wolfgang begins to tell his tale. Set in London and Berlin in the 1930s and 40s, the topic of the piece is as pertinent today as it was then. Where does the immigrant belong? How does he deal with longing and exile? In love with Germany, Wolfgang is forced to leave for England with his wife in 1938 and longs to go "home," to the culture and cabaret of Berlin. In 1946, despite the Nazis murder of his mother, he does just that. The consequences of the hatmakers return to his Motherland are cataclysmic.
Directed by Mark Clements, The Milliner features Michel Gill, Julia Haubner, Caralyn Kozlowski, Maria Cellario, Donna Davis, Steven Hauck, and Glenn Kalison.
Set design by Todd Ivins, with costumes by Gregory Gale and lighting by Jeff Nellis.
