'The Mayor Who Would Be Sondheim' at the Mazer Theater

The Mayor Who Would Be Sondheim, a new comedy by John Doble, will be presented as part of the NY International Fringe Festival from the 13 - 28 Aug 2005 at the Mazer Theater.

The Mayor Who Would Be Sondheim is set in a small New Jersey city whose mayor is enamored of Broadway show tunes, who never met a civic issue that couldn't be addressed with a few, well-chosen lyrics. His love of music by Stephen Sondheim and other songwriters is put to the test as he attempts to lead the troubled city through bankruptcy, a sanitation strike, racial tension, citizen unrest and accusations of police misconduct, all while running for re-election!

The Mayor Who Would Be Sondheim is based loosely on playwright Doble's earlier life in politics. Doble worked in city government for a number of years as well as in numerous statewide and national elections - including, most recently, the John Kerry Presidential bid.

Directed by Tom Rowan, The Mayor Who Would Be Sondheim features a cast of six: Stu Richel as the Mayor, Nina Daniels, Scott Giguere, Craig Anthony Grant, Larry Greenbush and Mitch Poulos.

In addtion to The Mayor Who Would Be Sondheim, Doble's other plays include 'Blind Date,'Montage' and 'Made In America'. His book of short stories 'Lefty and Other Stories', was nominated for the 2004 Pushcart Prize.

Director Tom Rowan's additional directing credits include the premiere of Craig Lucas' 'Grief' and Deborah Grimberg's 'The Honey Makers.' He was also the recipient of the 1998 Drama League Directing Fellowship.

The Mayor Who Would Be Sondheim is presented by Dawn Elane, with Carpe Dream Productions.
