The Little Foxes at NYTW from 10 Sep - 31 Oct
New York Theatre Workshop (NYTW) in association with La Jolla Playhouse presents Lillian Hellman's The Little Foxes, opening at NYTW on 21 Sep 2010, following previews from 10 Sep and running through to 31 Oct 2010.
Director Ivo van Hove returns to NYTW to take on one of Lillian Hellman's most well-known plays, The Little Foxes. Van Hove's interpretation of this iconic play will be a study of how women of different races and classes contend with male aggression, power, and domination.
The Little Foxes is a study of greed, dishonesty, and one generation's unstoppable drive to ruthlessly exploit the resources of a previous generation.
Elizabeth Marvel, who collaborated with van Hove at NYTW, playing the title role of 'Hedda Gabler' and Blanche 'DuBois' in 'A Streetcar Named Desire,' will play 'Regina Giddens,' the strong and determined woman at the center of Hellman's web of deceit.
The cast of The Little Foxes will also feature Tina Benko, Marton Csokas, Sanjit De Silva, Lynda Gravatt, Cristin Milioti, Thomas Jay Ryan, Greig Sargeant, Christopher Evan Welch and Nick Westrate.
The production design for The Little Foxes is by Jan Versweyveld, costume design by Kevin Guyer and sound design by Jamie McElhinney.
The Little Foxes had its Broadway at the National Theatre on 15 Feb 1939, starring Tallulah Bankhead, where it ran for 410 performances and won the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award. The play has been revived on Broadway three times, the last time in 1997 starring Stockard Channing.
Bios: Tina Benko (Birdie Hubbard) recently performed in 'Restoration' at NYTW. Her Broadway and off-Broadway credits include 'Irena's Vow,' 'Top Girls,' 'Not About Nightingales,' 'Age of Iron,' 'Rough Sketch,' 'Post-Mortem,' 'Dark Yellow' and 'Wintertime.'
Marton Csokas (Ben Hubbard) has previously starred Off-BRoadway as 'Antony in 'Antony and Cleopatra.' Other credits incude 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf,' 'Twelfth Night' and 'Angels in America.' His film credits include "Alice in Wonderland," "The Bourne Supremacy," "Asylum," "Star Wars Episode II," and "Lord of the Rings I & II."
Sanjit De Silva (William Marshall) has appeared on stage in 'A Midsummer Night's Dream,' 'Masked,' 'Macbeth,' and 'Measure for Measure.' De Silva's film and television credits include "The Company Men," "August, "The Good Wife" and "The Unusuals."
Lynda Gravatt (Addie) has appeared on Broadway in 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,' 'Doubt,' '45 Seconds from Broadway' and 'King Hedley II.' Her Off-Broadway credits include 'Zooman and the Sign,' 'Purlie,' 'Intimate Apparel,' 'Crowns' and 'The Old Settler.'

Marvel's film and televisions credits include "Burn After Reading," "The Dying Gaul," "Ten Hundred Kings," "The District," "Kidnapped" and "Homicide."
Cristin Milioti (Alexandra Giddens) performed in 'The Heart is a Lonely Hunter' at New York Theatre Workshop. Broadway and off-Broadway credits include 'Coram Boy,' 'The Lieutenant of Inishmore,' 'Stunning,' 'The Retributionists' and 'Some Americans Abroad.'
Thomas Jay Ryan (Oscar Hubbard) has appeared in NYTW's production of 'The Misanthrope,' directed by Ivo van Hove. Broadway and off-Broadway credits include include 'In the Next Room,' 'Venus,' 'This Thing of Darkens,''Juno and the Paycheck' and 'The Temperamentals.' His film credits include "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," "Henry Fool," "The Book of Life," "Dream Boy" and "The Legend of Bagger Vance."
Greig Sargeant (Cal) has appeared at NYTW in 'The Sound and the Fury.' Sargeant's other theatre credits 'Dinner Party,' 'Dido Queen of Carthage,' 'Strictly Dishonorable,' 'Titus Andronicus,' 'The Cherry Orchard,' 'The Seagull' and 'Measure for Measure.'
Christopher Evan Welch (Horace Giddens) appeared in New York Theatre Workshop's production of 'A Streetcar Named Desire,' directed by Ivo van Hove. Broadway and off-Broadway credits include 'Festen,' 'The Crucible,' 'The Marriage of Bette and Boo,' 'The Pain and the Itch,' 'Writer's Block,' 'Much Ado About Nothing' and 'Measure for Measure.' Welch's film and television credits include "Vicky Christina Barcelona," "The Good Shepherd," "The Interpreter," "War of the Worlds," "Rubicon," "Nurse Jackie," "The Practice," and "Third Watch."
Nick Westrate's (Leo Hubbard) credits include 'The Boys in the Band,' 'Tartuffe' and 'The Merchant of Venice.' His film and television credits include "Watcher," "Mildred Pierce," and "New Amsterdam."
Lillian Hellman (Playwright) plays include 'The Children's Hour' (1934), 'The Little Foxes' (1939), 'Toys in the Attic' (1960) and a musical adaptation of Voltaire's 'Candide' with Leonard Bernstein in 1960. She is the recipient of numerous theatrical awards including: the New York Drama Critics Circle Award (1941 and 1960), a Gold Medal from the Academy of Arts and Letters for Distinguished Achievement in the Theatre (1964); and election to the Theatre Hall of Fame (1973). In addition to being a celebrated playwright, Hellman is also an award winning author receiving recognition for her three published memoirs— 'An Unfinished Woman' (1969), which won the National Book Award; 'Pentimento' (1973); and 'Scoundrel Time' (1976).
Born in New Orleans, Hellman began her career as a play reader in New York City and later as a script reader in Hollywood where she met Dashiell Hammett who would become her companion until his death in 1961. Together, Hellman and Hammett in addition to their careers as writers became well-known political and social activists. Lillian Hellman died on June 30, 1984 at the age of 79 at her home on Martha's Vineyard. Ivo van Hove began his career as a stage director in 1981, working with plays he had written himself (Ziektekiemen, Geruchten). He was artistic manager at AKT, Akt-Vertical and De Tijd, successively. Between 1990 and 2000 he was the director at Het Zuidelijk Toneel. Since 2001, Van Hove has been general director of Toneelgroep Amsterdam (the Amsterdam Theatre Group). He has coordinated productions at the Edinburgh International Festival, the Venice Biennale, theHolland Festival, Theater der Welt in Germany, the Wiener Festwochen in Vienna, as well as working in London, Canada, Lisbon, Paris, Verona, Hannover, Porto, Cairo, Poland and New York. He has directed companies from the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg, the Staatstheater in Stuttgart and the New York Theatre Workshop. He produced 'Thuisfront' for Dutch television and his first cinematic film, 'Amsterdam,' came out in 2009.
