The Explorers Club extends run by two weeks
Manhattan Theatre Club's world premiere of The Explorers Club, the new play by Tony Award nominee Nell Benjamin (Legally Blonde), has extended its run by two weeks and will now play through to 04 Aug 2013.
The Explorers Club opened at New York City Center - Stage I on 20 Jun 2013, following previews from 28 May 2013, and was originally scheduled to close on 21 Jul 2013.
The comedy oened to mixed, but mostly good reviews: Mostly blunt-witted (NY Times); Boasts superior feats of slapstick (NY Post); Collapses in a puddle of silliness (Record); Expect to laugh frequently.
London, 1879, The Explorers Club is in crisis: their acting president (Lorenzo Pisoni) wants to admit a woman (Jennifer Westfeldt), and their bartender is terrible. True, this female candidate is brilliant, beautiful, and has discovered a legendary Lost City, but the decision to let in a woman could shake the very foundation of the British Empire, and how do you make such a decision without a decent drink? Grab your safety goggles for some very mad science involving deadly cobras, irate Irishmen and the occasional airship.
Directed by Marc Bruni, the cast of The Explorers Club features Brian Avers (Professor Cope), Max Baker (Sir Bernard Humphries), Steven Boyer (Professor Walling), Arnie Burton (Beebe/An Irish Assassin), Carson Elrod (Luigi), David Furr (Harry Percy), John McMartin (Professor Sloane), Lorenzo Pisoni (Lucius Fretway) and Jennifer Westfeldt (Phyllida Spotte-Hume/Countess Glamorgan).
The creative team features scenic design by Donyale Werle, costumes by Anita Yavich, lighting by Philip S. Rosenberg and sound by Darron L West.
