The Anarchist to play at the Lyceum Theatre



The World premiere of The Anarchist, written and directed by David Mamet, will open at at the Lyceum Theatre on 2 Dec 2012, following previews from 13 Nov 2012.

The play will star Oscar nominee Debra Winger, in her Broadway debut, and Tony Award-winning Broadway vetaran Patti LuPone.

The Anarchist is a two-character play set in a women's prison. The plot has not ben revealed, but it involves Cathy (Patti LuPone), an inmate with a radical past, who asks Ann (Debra Winger), the prison's female warden, for parole.

The show is being produced on Broadway by Jeffrey Richards, Jerry Frankel and Howard and Janet Kagan.

Bios:

David Mamet (playwright, Director), winner of the Pulitzer Prize for 'Glengarry Glen Ross,' was last represented on Broadway with 'Race,' which he also directed. He has also written 'Sexual Perversity in Chicago,' 'Lakeboat,' 'The Water Engine,' 'The Duck Variations,' 'Reunion,' 'The Blue Hour,' 'The Shawl,' 'Bobby Gould in Hell,' 'Edmond,' 'Romance,' 'The Old Neighborhood' and the recent adaptation of 'The Voysey Inheritance.' A two-time Academy Award nominee for "The Verdict" and "Wag the Dog," Mamet's additional film credits include "The Postman Always Rings Twice," "The Untouchables," "Hoffa," "Ronin," "The Edge" and "We're No Angels." He is a member of New York's Atlantic Theater Company, which he founded in 1985 with William H. Macy.

Patti LuPone (Cathy) was nominated for a 2011 Tony Award for her performance in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.' Other major Broadway credits: 'Gypsy' (Tony Award), 'Sweeney Todd' (Tony nomination), 'Anything Goes' (Tony nomination), 'Evita' (Tony Award) and 'The Robber Bridegroom' (Tony nomination). Major London stage credits: 'Les Misérables' (world premiere, Olivier Award), 'The Cradle Will Rock' (Olivier Award) and Sunset Boulevard (world premiere, Olivier nomination). TV: "Life Goes On," "Oz," "Frasier" (Emmy nomination), "Will & Grace," "Ugly Betty," "Passion" (Live From Lincoln Center), "Sweeney Todd" and "Candide" with the NY Philharmonic and "Mahagonny" (Great Performances) on PBS. Film: "Witness," "Driving Miss Daisy," "The 24 Hour Woman," "State and Main," "Heist," "Summer of Sam" and "City By the Sea." Debra Winger (Ann) has been nominated for Best Actress Academy Awards for "An Officer and a Gentleman" (Paula Pokrifki), "Terms of Endearment" (Emma Horton) and "Shadowlands" (Joy Gresham.) Other notable films from her early career includes "Cannery Row," "Mike's Murder," "Leap of Faith," "Forget Paris" and receiving a Golden Globe nomination for "A Dangerous Woman." Winger's stage work includes "The Diary of Anne Frank," and "How I Learned to Drive" and "Ivanov" at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
