Aaron Sorkin has become synonymous with fast-paced, quick-witted writing, and that’s in large part thanks to his Broadway-debut play, A Few Good Men. The military courtroom drama opened at the Music Box Theatre in 1989, became an Oscar-nominated blockbuster film in 1992, and, almost 40 years later, returns to New York City for its first Broadway revival, playing at Lincoln Center Theater’s Vivian Beaumont Theater. Tom Blyth, Bradley Whitford, Krysta Rodriguez, and more lead a cast directed by Tony Award winner Michael Arden (Maybe Happy Ending, The Lost Boys).

Across the above incarnations and other stage productions, A Few Good Men has made and solidified stars thanks to its meaty, complex characters that offer actors an opportunity to wrestle with the truth, justice, and how patriotism can warp both.

With a decades-spanning career that includes hits like The West Wing, The Social Network, and its upcoming sequel, The Social Reckoning, Sorkin has a rich history of writing prized roles for actors. Now, take a look at the stars who, over the decades, have played major roles in Sorkin’s first drama.

Tom Blyth

English actor Tom Blyth makes his Broadway debut as Lieutenant Daniel A. Kaffee in the 2026 A Few Good Men revival. As the story’s main character, a lawyer who defends two Marine Corps members accused of murder, Kaffee starts off happy to settle for a plea but soon dives deeper into the trial’s nuanced truth.

Blyth has big shoes to fill, but he has the stardom and talent to do it. He's best known for his Saturn Award-nominated performance as Coriolanus Snow in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. The Juilliard graduate has also starred in the prison drama Wasteman (BIFA nomination for Best Supporting Performance), the romantic thriller Plainclothes (Sundance Film Festival Jury Prize winner for Best Ensemble), and the MGM+ series Billy the Kid in the title role.

Bradley Whitford

Aaron Sorkin has many repeat collaborators, and Bradley Whitford is one of them. Whitford may be best known for his role as Josh Lyman, White House Deputy Chief of Staff in The West Wing, but that's not the only political drama he and Sorkin share: Whitford made his Broadway debut in the original production of A Few Good Men, replacing Clark Gregg as Captain Ross.

Now, the three-time Emmy Award winner returns to that play — and to Broadway for the first time in almost two decades. This time, Whitford takes on Colonel Nathan R. Jessep, a shady commanding officer in Guantanamo Bay, where the trial’s murder took place. The celebrated character actor is also known for roles in non-Sorkin TV shows like The Handmaid’s Tale and Transparent.

Krysta Rodriguez

As the play's title suggests, masculinity dominates A Few Good Men's world. So Lieutenant Commander JoAnne Galloway, played by Krysta Rodriguez, must hold her own and conform to the tough, no-nonsense dynamic of the trial. Rodriguez has played such resilient characters on Broadway before; she is known for her lead roles in musicals including First Date, Spring Awakening, In the Heights, and The Addams Family.

She most recently starred as Roxie in Chicago earlier this year, and now, she gets to show off her dramatic chops as the smart and headstrong Galloway.

Jack Nicholson

“You can’t handle the truth!” With those five words, spoken by Jack Nicholson, Sorkin crafted one of Hollywood’s most well-known and most-quoted lines. In director Rob Reiner's 1992 A Few Good Men film, Nicholson played Colonel Jessep, who stays on a low simmer before exploding in a climactic courtroom scene. With his ability to inspire both warmth and fear, Nicholson was perfectly cast as the enigmatic colonel who perhaps understands the complexity of nationalism better than anyone else in the film.

Nicholson earned an Academy Award nomination for his role. Some of his other iconic screen credits include One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Batman, and Terms of Endearment. His 12 Oscar nods make him the most nominated male actor in the Academy's history.

Tom Cruise

Hollywood star Tom Cruise played Lieutenant Kaffee in the film adaptation of Sorkin’s play, earning a Golden Globe Award nomination. Cruise made headlines for his $12.5 million salary for the performance, which solidified his status as a Hollywood icon.

Like his role as Maverick in Top Gun just a few years prior, Kaffee requires a heavy dose of charisma. Cruise was praised for his performance that let him show greater depth, and his career has been unstoppable since: He’s a four-time Oscar nominee and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Demi Moore

Standing alongside titans, Demi Moore showed she was just as clever as her male counterparts as JoAnne Galloway in the Few Good Men film. Jodie Foster and Linda Hamilton were also considered for the role that Moore eventually won. It is Galloway’s key advice that turns the tides of the show's main trial.

Like her co-stars, Moore is a Hollywood icon: In 2025, she appeared on Time's 100 most influential people in the world, and she has her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Starting her career on General Hospital, she became a member of the Brat Pack and has worked in film and TV for decades, earning an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe Award for her role in the body horror film The Substance.

Kevin Bacon

Kevin Bacon portrayed Captain Ross in the Few Good Men movie. He brought a kindly but formidable presence to the story’s pivotal courtroom scenes, ultimately losing his legal battle to Cruise’s character but behaving with grace and sportsmanship.

Bacon was no Hollywood newcomer for this film that employed all A-listers. He was already established thanks to roles in Footloose and Animal House (which also starred Tom Hulce, from A Few Good Men's Broadway premiere). Bacon would go on to win a Golden Globe Award and become a screen legend for roles in I Love Dick, Mystic River, and X-Men: First Class.

Tom Hulce

Tom Hulce starred as the Broadway play’s original Kaffee, showing how the character grows from superficial charmer to justice-fighting advocate. He went on to receive a Tony Award nomination for his lead performance and later transitioned into producing, picking up a Tony win for Spring Awakening.

By the time A Few Good Men came along, Hulce was already a name thanks to his Oscar-nominated turn as Mozart in Amadeus. He's also known for his roles in Animal House and voice work as Quasimodo in Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Megan Gallagher

Megan Gallagher originated the role of JoAnne Galloway in the Broadway premiere of A Few Good Men. It is Galloway’s work ethic, duty, and determination that earns her others’ respect, and this in turn rewarded Gallagher: the actress won a 1990 Theatre World Award for her tenacious performance.

A Juilliard alum, Gallagher is a fixture of stage and screen whose many TV credits include Suits, The Mentalist, 24, and China Beach.

Clark Gregg

A Few Good Men began a fruitful partnership between Aaron Sorkin and Clark Gregg, who originated the role of Captain Jack Ross in the 1989 Broadway production. Ross oversees the prosecution in trial, strategically needling the accused young Marines while holding onto his respect as a lawyer.

After making his Broadway debut in A Few Good Men, Gregg went on to have a recurring role as FBI Special Agent Mike Casper in The West Wing, one of his many screen credits. Gregg also starred opposite Julia Louis-Dreyfus in The New Adventures of Old Christine and picked up a Saturn Award for his performance in The Avengers.

Stephen Lang

Stephen Lang came to A Few Good Men's Broadway premiere fresh off of his Tony-nominated turn in The Speed of Darkness. He originated the role of Colonel Jessep and went on to have a busy career on stage, earning a Helen Hayes Award and nominations for Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards.

He’s been equally busy on screen, most notably as Colonel Quaritch in Avatar, for which he won the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor. He went on to star in the film's two sequels, and his best-known TV roles include Waldo on Into the Badlands and David Cord on The Good Fight.

Rob Lowe

Rob Lowe starred as Kaffee in the Theatre Royal Haymarket, London production of Sorkin’s play in 2005. Angels in America director David Esbjornson staged the production that also featured Suranne Jones as Galloway and John Barrowman as Ross.

Lowe was a natural fit for Kaffee thanks to his likable demeanor, which he displayed in hit shows like Parks and Recreation and, of course, Sorkin's The West Wing, in which he played deputy White House Communications Director Sam Seaborn.

Jensen Ackles

A production of A Few Good Men came to Casa Mañana Theatre in Fort Worth, Texas in 2007 with Jensen Ackles starring as Kaffee. Ackles is known for his roles in larger-than-life TV shows such as Dean Winchester in the fantasy drama Supernatural, Ben in the superhero satire The Boys, and Eric Brady in the soap opera Days of Our Lives, the latter of which earned him three Emmy nominations. As such, he certainly had the commanding presence needed to play Kaffee.
