Hold on to your horns! Following an acclaimed run with the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts this past summer, a new revival of Eugène Ionesco’s Rhinoceros, translated by Derek Prouse, will come to Broadway this spring. Emmy winners John Turturro (Severance, Monk) and Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) will return to star in the run at the Todd Haimes Theatre alongside Emmy and Tony winner Tony Shalhoub (Monk), who newly joins the cast. Performances run from April 7 to June 13, with opening night on April 25.

Written in 1959, Rhinoceros is set in a small French town whose residents turn to rhinoceroses one by one, as a comic allegory for social conformity. Turturro plays the lead role of Bérenger; Shalhoub is Jean, Bérenger’s friend; and Maslany is Daisy, Bérenger’s coworker and love interest.

Turturro performs on Broadway for the first time since 2003’s Life (x) 3. Shalhoub won a Tony for starring in The Band’s Visit and has more recently appeared off Broadway in plays like Antigone (This Play I Read in High School). Maslany has previously performed on Broadway in the plays Network and Grey House.

Additional casting for the Broadway production has yet to be announced.

Director Diane Paulus, who staged the A. R. T. production, leads a creative team that includes scenic designer Riccardo Hernández, costume designer Anita Yavich, lighting designer Jen Schriever, sound designer Fitz Patton, special effects designer Markus Maurette, hair and wig designer Tom Watson, makeup designer Kyle Krueger, fight director Thomas Schall, and movement advisor Jill Johnson.

Rhinoceros replaces the previously announced revival of The Full Monty, directed by Leigh Silverman and choreographed by Connor Gallagher, as the spring production in Roundabout Theatre Company’s Broadway season. The Full Monty has been postponed indefinitely due to cast availability.
