Go home to Skid Row! *Little Shop of Horrors* has taken root at the Westside Theatre for its latest acclaimed Off-Broadway run.

Based on a 1960 black comedy film, the *Little Shop of Horrors* musical centers on a hapless flower shop worker, Seymour, and his new exotic plant that happens to feed on blood. The mere presence of the plant in the window quickly brings traffic to the small shop, and the owner, Mushnik, promotes Seymour because of it. Seymour even finally catches the interest of Audrey, his coworker who's been stuck in a relationship with a sadistic dentist, Orin. All, it seems, because of the plant. Surely this Venus flytrap-esque thing will stay in its pot and not cause trouble as long as Seymour pricks his finger every now and then, right?

Soon the plant grows out of hand and grows insatiable, and Seymour's tasked with committing some heinous acts to satisfy its bloodthirst. Though he's horrified at the thought, he's not ready to give up the fame and love that Audrey II, which he's dubbed the plant, has given him.

*Little Shop of Horrors* is a rare musical, in that its Off-Broadway productions are perhaps more famous than its Broadway run, so it's no wonder that the show has blossomed at its latest Off-Broadway home since 2019. The world premiere of *Little Shop of Horrors* off-Broadway was in 1982, and librettist/lyricist Howard Ashman even declined to transfer the production to Broadway. The musical eventually made it there in 2003, receiving various awards nominations, but *Little Shop of Horrors* has remained most famous as an Off-Broadway staple, and a favorite of community theatres and schools. The musical also received its own film adaptation in 1986, which has become a cult classic.

## What to watch for

- It takes three actors to bring Audrey II to life: One provides the booming voice of Audrey II, and two act as puppeteers behind the scenes. Just like the actors the audience sees, even the puppeteers have understudies, too.
- Four different Audrey II puppets are used in the show as the plant gets progressively bigger. The smallest can fit on a table, and the largest takes up most of the Westside Theatre's stage!
- In the show's official script, Audrey II's character is described as "an anthropomorphic cross between a Venus flytrap and an avocado." Talk about something that's green! 
- A "skid row" is a term for any impoverished neighborhood and gives *Little Shop of Horrors*'s Skid Row its name. There is a neighborhood unofficially called Skid Row in Los Angeles, where the original 1960 film is set.
- The musical had its first Off-Broadway run at the Orpheum Theatre from 1982-1987. At the time of closing, it was the third-longest-running Off-Broadway show in history. It's been beat out by plenty of shows since then — including *Stomp*, which has enjoyed nearly 30 years at the Orpheum so far — but remains an iconic show in Off-Broadway history.

The *Little Shop of Horrors* musical is a campy horror comedy centered on a florist named Seymour. He's sweet, yet clumsy and awkward, and he has a massive crush on his beautiful coworker, Audrey, who's already in a relationship with a sadistic dentist, Orin. His life turns around, though, when he comes upon an unusual plant that he brings into the shop. Suddenly, business is booming. The flower shop owner, Mushnik, warms up to Seymour and becomes the father figure he never had. Even Audrey starts to show interest in him.

But there's a catch. This unusual plant is unusually thirsty — and not for water. It's a flesh-and-blood-eating specimen — sweetly dubbed Audrey II — that soon becomes unsatisfied with Seymour pricking his finger every so often to feed it, and it comes alive to demand more substantial fare. If Seymour's up to the task of getting him some fresh human meat, the plant promises to make all of Seymour's dreams of fame, love, and fortune come true.

*Little Shop of Horrors* is based on a low-budget black comedy film, *The Little Shop of Horrors*, which debuted in 1960. It would become a musical more than 20 years later, with the premiere of *Little Shop of Horrors* off Broadway in 1982. The show played the Orpheum Theatre (currently home to [*Stomp*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/15-stomp-tickets)) through 1987 and was the third-longest-running Off-Broadway show ever at the time. The musical would later transfer to Broadway in 2003, though Ashman initially refused, wanting to preserve the intimate nature of the show. He seems to have been onto something, as the Broadway production ran for just under a year and earned a single Tony nomination. The musical has remained most popular, though, as an Off-Broadway hit, thriving in smaller venues like its current home, the 270-seat Westside Theatre, as well as regional, community, and school theatres.

The 2019 *Little Shop of Horrors* revival has seen a string of celebrity actors as Seymour, beginning with Jonathan Groff. He's been followed by Gideon Glick, Jeremy Jordan, Conrad Ricamora, Skylar Astin, and Rob McClure. Tammy Blanchard and [Christian Borle](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/christian-borle) also starred in the original cast of the revival as Audrey and Orin, respectively.

The plant at the centre of <a href="/show/little-shop-of-horrors">Little Shop of Horrors</a> that feeds on human blood may have had its sights on world domination, but the musical that was based on the low-budget 1960 comedy sci-fi film of the same name has actually long achieved it, so it ultimately got what it wanted. And now the show has come full circle, 37 years on from its Off-Off-Broadway beginnings at the WPA Theatre (now no more) in May 1982, before moving to the larger Orpheum Theater on Second Avenue in the East Village that summer, where it ran for five years and became the highest-grossing show in Off-Broadway history until then, to find a new home at another Off-Broadway house just off Eighth Avenue in midtown Manhattan.In the intervening years, it has been turned into a feature film and played in the West End and on Broadway (the latter in a new production in 2003 that ran for less than a year at the Virginia Theatre, now the August Wilson), but its true home is a more modestly scaled place like the 270-seater <a href="/theatres/westside-theatre">Westside Theatre</a>, a former Baptist church built in 1889 that has been used as a theatre space since the mid-1970s.But while it is naturally a special pleasure and privilege to see the show at close quarters again, everything about this new version screams Broadway, from its above-the-title casting of multiple Tony Award nominees Jonathan Groff, Tammy Blanchard and two-time Tony winner <a href="/actor-profile/christian-borle">Christian Borle</a>, to its creative staff, led by director Michael Mayer, Tony winner for his original production of Spring Awakening. This may be the priciest Skid Row ever brought to an Off-Broadway stage.The performances are at times similarly exaggerated. In trying to mine new colours for Audrey, the abused floral shop assistant who falls for her work colleague Seymour as he nurtures a new exotic plant that he names Audrey II after her, Tammy Blanchard channels her into a sultry Rita Heyworth-inspired character, with her songs slowed down into torch songs of despair. 'Somewhere that's Green' sounds less aspirational of a better life than a dread doubt of ever achieving it.Jonathan Groff seems similarly depressed and downtrodden as Seymour, while Christian Borle plays the dentist Orin and a range of other characters purely as bright, eager caricature.There are some compensating pleasures from the trio of street urchins Ronnette (Ari Groover), Crystal (Salome Smith) and Chiffon (Joy Woods), who are a kind of Greek chorus observing and commenting on the action in Alan Menken's wonderful pastiche score. It is here that the enduring pleasures of the show itself are most apparent.Nicholas Mahon's new puppet designs for the plant itself are impressive as it grows ever larger. The Westside Theatre building was designed by architect Henry F. Kilburn as the Second German Baptist Church in 1890. Nearly a century later, the space housed a discotheque, Club Sanctuary, until it was finally converted into a theatre with two stages (upstairs and downstairs) in 1973.

The Chelsea Theatre Group presented the first production – David Storey’s *The Contractor* – in October 1973. The building was renamed the Chelsea Westside Theatre. Under the management of Raymond L. Gaspard, the theatre was rechristened the Westside Arts Theatre from 1981 until 1990.

After an extensive renovation by new management, the venue reopened in March 1991 as the Westside Theatre. The Upstairs Theatre has a capacity of 270 seats, while the Downstairs Theatre holds 249 seats.
