*An Enemy of the People* is a play about Dr. Thomas Stockmann, a medical officer in a small Norwegian spa town. Upon learning the water used in the spa baths, a major town business, is contaminated, he publishes an article exposing the truth. But instead of receiving gratitude for protecting his fellow townsfolk, like he expects, he instead becomes the target of a campaign against him in the name of preserving the town's reputation and prosperity.

Ibsen wrote *An Enemy of the People* in response to his previous play, *Ghosts*. In that play, he exposed moral hypocrisy in his society and was criticized. Stockmann is in some ways a stand-in for Ibsen, with the events of *An Enemy of the People* loosely inspired by Ibsen's own life.

Since its 1883 premiere in Norway, *An Enemy of the People* has been produced and adapted numerous times. The show has appeared 10 previous times on Broadway alone, the latest being in 2012 with Boyd Gaines in the title role.

Now, Jeremy Strong steps into the role of Stockmann, returning to Broadway for the first time since his 2008 debut in *A Man For All Seasons*. Since then, he has achieved global fame for starring as Kendall Roy on the HBO drama *Succession* for all four of its seasons. He won an Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award for his performance, and his other acclaimed credits include the films *Zero Dark Thirty*, *Molly's Game*, and *The Big Short*.

This revival of *An Enemy of the People* on Broadway exhibits parallels with [*A Doll's House*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/26989-a-dolls-house-tickets), another Ibsen revival from spring 2023. Both feature *Succession* stars — *A Doll's House* starred Arian Moayed as Torvald Helmer — and are adapted by Amy Herzog, the Pulitzer-nominated playwright of *4000 Miles*.

Succession's Jeremy Strong returns to Broadway for the first time since 2008 in Ibsen's drama about small-town scandal. A doctor publicizes poison in the water and is punished for daring to threaten the town's prosperity. Find out more about tickets to this thrilling revival.

Ibsen wrote *An Enemy of the People* in 1882 and premiered the play a year later. In the show, Stockmann works as a medical officer in a small Norwegian spa town, where spa baths are the main source of its revenue and fame. When Stockmann discovers the water is poisoned, he expects to be praised for saving the lives of countless future visitors. Instead, the government and citizens blame him for ruining the town's reputation, creating a schism between Stockmann and the residents and driving a conflict between ethics and the town’s self-preservation.

The last *An Enemy of the People* Broadway revival was in 2012, with Boyd Gaines starring in Manhattan Theatre Club's production. Strong last appeared on Broadway four years earlier, making his debut as Richard Rich in *A Man For All Seasons*.

Gold is in his wheelhouse with this fresh take on *An Enemy of the People* in New York. After winning a Tony for *Fun Home*, he earned his most recent Tony nomination for directing *A Doll's House, Part 2*, Lucas Hnath's sequel to Ibsen's most famous play.

## What to watch for

- That sounds familiar! In spring 2023, another *Succession* star, Arian Moayed, starred in *A Doll's House*, another Broadway revival of an Ibsen play adapted by Amy Herzog.
- Amy Herzog isn't the only Pulitzer honoree to adapt *An Enemy of the People*. In 1950, an adaptation by Arthur Miller, a Pulitzer winner for *Death of a Salesman*, premiered at Broadway's Broadhurst Theatre.
- Ibsen’s earlier play *Ghosts* garnered hypocrisy and criticism. *An Enemy of the People* is a response to that event, with Stockmann and the play's action loosely inspired by Ibsen's experience.
- The play is also inspired by the experiences of two other real-life people. One was a doctor in the now-Czech Republic who exposed a cholera outbreak at a local health spa. He eventually had to leave his town due to the public outcry against him. The other was a Norwegian chemist who questioned the cleanliness of a steam kitchen.
- "Stockmann" is a family name that comes from the Telemark region of Norway. Ibsen was a descendant of the Stockmann family, and the character of Peter Stockmann is based on his uncle, another family descendant.

Jeremy Strong is an Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning actor best known for his role as Kendall Roy on the hit HBO series *Succession*.

Born December 25, 1978 in Boston, Massachusetts, Strong became involved in local theatre as a child, performing in plays and musicals. He later attended Yale University where he earned a B.A. in English and performed in the campus undergraduate theatre group. 

After performing in numerous summer companies, Strong landed Off-Broadway roles in plays including *Defiance*, *Frank’s Home*, and *New Jerusalem*. In 2008, he made his Broadway debut in *A Man for All Seasons*. Over the years, he would return to Off-Broadway for several plays, such as *Our House*, *A Month in the Country*, and *The Great God Plan*.

During this time, Strong also began his film career, playing the lead in the 2008 film *Humboldt County* and supporting roles in movies such as *Lincoln*, *Zero Dark Thirty*, and *Selma*. Ultimately, his part in the 2015 film *The Big Short* springboarded his career, as director Adam McKay also cast him in his upcoming show, *Succession*. Although originally considered for the part of Roman Roy, he was cast as Kendall Roy and captivated audiences with his intense performance while the show was on the air from 2018 to 2023. Critics gave Strong rave reviews, and he went on to earn Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG awards.

In 2024, Strong returns to Broadway to star in a new adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s *An Enemy of the People*, playing Dr. Thomas Stockmann.

Imperioli is best known for his portrayal of Christopher Moltisanti in the critically acclaimed television series *The Sopranos*. Imperioli is also known for playing mob associate Spider in Martin Scorsese's *Goodfellas*. Additionally, he appeared in Spike Lee's *Jungle Fever* and *Summer of Sam*, the American version of *Life on Mars*, and the second season of *The White Lotus*, earning another Emmy Award nomination for his role as Dominic Di Grasso.

In film, Pedretti played Leslie Van Houten in Quentin Tarantino's *Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood*.

Designed by Alan Sayles, the Circle in the Square Theatre (along with its much larger sibling, the [Gershwin Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/gershwin-theatre)) is inside the confines of the Paramount Plaza office tower. The Circle in the Square Theatre was built in 1970 as the Uris Brothers tore down the former Capitol Theatre in order to construct the tower.

The current Broadway theatre is the successor of a same-named Off-Broadway theatre, which operated from 1950 to 1995 at multiple locations in Greenwich Village. The Circle in the Square repertory company staged its first Broadway production — a revival of *Mourning Becomes Electra* — at its current venue on November 15, 1972.

The venue is one of the smallest and most intimate spaces on Broadway. Productions are generally staged in the round, as audiences are seated on three sides of the stage. The theatre is also associated with the Circle in the Square Theatre School, the only accredited drama school attached to a Broadway house.
