1.

The group went from city streets to center stage.

In the late '80s, longtime friends Chris Wink, Phil Stanton, and Matt Goldman had the idea to make a show that was like a living artwork. They began appearing as Blue Man Group on the streets of New York City, in East Village performance spaces, and even in Central Park with a funky funeral procession that was covered by MTV. The show blue — er, blew — up in a big way.

Blue Man Group began performing at the Astor Place Theatre in the East Village in November 1991. The show follows three alien "blue men" navigating life on Earth and getting creative while they're at it. After 34 years and over 17,000 performances, the Off-Broadway run closed in February 2025.

2.

Blue Man Group's name, shade, and size have meaning.

Blue Man Group has always been a trio, and that’s intentional on the part of the co-creators. Triangles inherently have, per Goldman, a built-in “tension that makes for good theater.” “Blue Man” sounded like “human,” and that helped spark the name. Their glossy, azure makeup-covered complexions mirror a color linked to French artist Yves Klein.

3.

Blue Man Group doesn’t say a word on stage.

Hush! The trio stays mute during performances and communicates nonverbally through music, mime, and movement. That makes for a global appeal — the group has visited 25 countries — that connects with a range of ages and cultural backgrounds. So, no matter what language you speak, you’re always on the same page. Silence is golden, and blue.

4.

You’ve got to measure up to go Blue.

Blue Man Group enforces a strict height requirement for the sake of visual impact. The group’s official site advises prospective performers: “Please note you must fall within our height requirement, which is between 5’10” and 6’2”.” Why? In an oral history of the group in Vulture, Wink said “uniformity forces you to look closer.”

6.

It’s not just a boys club.

Andrea Johnson was the first woman to perform as a Blue Man. She worked with them from 1999 to 2001. “As a Black woman, I figured it was a long shot,” she told Vulture in the oral history. “But to my surprise, they said that as long as I met the height requirement and could drum, I had as good a chance as anyone.”

Blue Man Group is often accompanied by a live band to enhance the experience. Percussionist Mackenna Tolfa broke new ground as the first featured female drummer and deejay.

7.

The show can get messy.

Blue Man Group has famously used paint, cereal, marshmallows, and water balloons in its messy, colorful, interactive performances. Audience members in the first few rows receive plastic ponchos to protect them from getting splashed. This area is known as the “poncho zone,” and sitting there makes for a highly immersive adventure — and a kick for theatregoers who’ve dreamed of becoming a human Jackson Pollock painting.

8.

PVC pipes play a key role in every Blue Man Group show.

Blue Man Group uses custom white polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes as its signature instrument, which members have described as low-tech, sculptural, percussive, and primal. Each tube is cut to a precise length, which determines the pitch of the note and synthesizer-y tone that comes out.

9.

Blue Man Group took its act from stage to page.

Blue Man World came out in October 2016 to coincide with Blue Man Group’s 25th anniversary. The book takes a tongue-in-cheek anthropological look at the group’s origins, habits, and practices. Archival photographs, infographics, custom artwork, and interviews add their own dimensions.
