Second Stage Theatre's 2018-2019 Broadway Season
Second Stage Theatre have announced details of the company's inaugural Broadway season at the Helen Hayes Theatre, purchased by 2ST in 2015.
The 2018-2019 season will kick off with a revival of Academy Award winner Kenneth Lonergan's Lobby Hero, directed by Trip Cullman, in March 2018. "Captain America" star Chris Evans will make his Broadway debut as Bill, whilst Michael Cera, who previously appeared on Broadway in the 2014 production of 'This Is Our Youth,' will take on the role of Jeff.
Synopsis: "What happens when emotions come in conflict with principles, and how do choices under pressure define who we really are? The lobby of a Manhattan apartment building is much more than a waiting area for four New Yorkers involved in a murder investigation. It's a testing ground for what happens when personal and professional personas find themselves at odds. A young security guard with big ambitions clashes with his stern boss, an intense rookie cop and her unpredictable partner."
This will be followed by a new production of Young Jean Lee's Straight White Men, directed by Anna D. Shapiro, which is expected to begin performances in July 2018. Lee will make history as the first female Asian-American playwright to ever be produced on Broadway.
Synopsis: "It's Christmas Eve, and Ed has gathered his three adult sons to celebrate with matching pajamas, trash-talking, and Chinese takeout. But when a question they can't answer interrupts their holiday cheer, they are forced to confront their own identities. Straight White Men takes a hilariously ruthless look at the classic American father-son drama. This is one white Christmas like you've never seen before."
Exact dates, as well as additional casting and creative team information, for the Broadway productions will be announced at a later date.
Second Stage Theatre will also continue its tenures at its off-Broadway homes of the Tony Kiser Theatre and McGinn/Cazale Theatre.
Joining the previously announced 35th Anniversary production of Harvey Fierstein's Torch Song, directed by Moisés Kaufman and starring Michael Urie, which is set to begin performances in September 2017, will be the New York premiere of Tracy Letts' Mary Page Marlowe. Performances are expected to begin in June 2018 at the Tony Kiser Theatre.
Synopsis: "If you looked back on eleven moments from your life, would you recognize yourself, or would you see a stranger? Mary Page Marlowe is a seemingly ordinary accountant from Ohio who has experienced pain and joy, success and failure. In this sweeping but intimate play, Tracy Letts gives us a haunting portrait of a complex woman, demonstrating how a series of forgotten moments can add up to one memorable life."
Another production to be staged at the Tony Kiser Theatre will be announced in the coming months.
Second Stage Theatre has also confirmed a partnership with Center Theatre Group in Los Angeles. Their mission is to co-commission playwrights whose work will begin life at CTG and then transfer to New York. The selected playwrights include Young Jean Lee, Tony nominee Jon Robin Baitz, Will Eno, Tony winner Lisa Kron, and Pulitzer winners Lynn Nottage (currently represented on Broadway by Sweat) and Paula Vogel (writer of Broadway's Indecent).
2ST also announced they have commissioned new works for Broadway from Bess Wohl, Lydia R. Diamond and Dominique Morisseau.
