Roundabout announces cast for Into The Woods
Roundabout Theatre Company has announced casting for its upcoming revival of Into The Woods, by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, reimagined by Fiasco Theater and directed by Noah Brody and Ben Steinfeld, beginning previews at the Laura Pels Theatre from 18 December 2014, officially opening on 22 January 2015 and concluding its limited engagament on 22 March 2015.
The cast includes Jessie Austrian (Baker's Wife), Noah Brody (Lucinda, Wolf & Cinderella's Prince), Paul L. Coffey (Mysterious Man), Andy Grotelueschen (Milky White, Florinda & Rapunzel's Prince), Liz Hayes (Cinderella's Stepmother & Jack's Mother), Claire Karpen (Cinderella & Granny), Jennifer Mudge (Witch), Patrick Mulryan (Jack & Steward), Ben Steinfeld (Baker), and Emily Young (Little Red Ridinghood & Rapunzel).
The creative team behind Into The Woods has also been announced and features choreography by Lisa Shriver, musical direction by Matt Castle, scenic design by Derek McLane, costumes by Whitney Locher, lighting design by Christopher Akerlind, and sound design by Darron L West.
Sondheim and Lapine's 1987 musical reinvents classic fairy tale characters as they journey into the woods to 'Mind the wolf, heed the witch and honor the giant', exploring the power of their wishes and what happens when they really do come true. As the first act follows characters such as Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and Cinderella in their quest for happiness, the second act looks beyond their happily ever afters and questions the morality behind each of these well known fairy tales, warning the audience that "children will listen".
With only 10 actors, one piano and boundless imagination, this 'witty and wildly' theatrical re-invention is Into The Woods like you've never seen it before. The musical was last seen in New York in 2012 at the Delacorte Theatre, Central Park in an outdoor production directed by Tim Sheader starring Donna Murphy, Amy Adams, Chip Zien and Denis O'Hare.
The original production of Into The Woods opened at the Martin Beck Theatre on 5 Nov 1987, running for 765 performances. A Broadway revival opened in 2002 at the Broadhurst Theatre starring Vanessa Williams and Laura Benanti, running for 279 performances. A film adaptation of the musical is scheduled to be released on 25 December 2014, produced by Walt Disney Studios, with direction by Rob Marshall.
