Red recoups its $2.25 million production costs
The Donmar Warehouse production of Red recouped its $2.25 million production costs as of 20 Jun 2010. The production, the biggest Tony Award-winner of the 2009-2010 season, ends its strictly limited engagement on 27 Jun 2010 at the Golden Theatre, playing 101 performances and 22 previews.
"I speak for all of my partners when I say that Red has been an incredible experience," commented producer Arielle Tepper Madover. "We're thrilled to be in continued partnership with the Donmar Warehouse and so thankful to have brought John Logan's wonderful play to Broadway, in Michael Grandage's superb production featuring Alfred Molina and Eddie Redmayne's unforgettable performances."
"We've had wonderful experiences working on Broadway with the Donmar Warehouse productions of Frost/Nixon, Mary Stuart and Hamlet," said Michael Grandage, artistic director of the Donmar Warehouse. "But John Logan's Red has been special and we're so thankful to see it succeed on Broadway and to have been welcomed so warmly. The Donmar looks forward to our future collaborations with Arielle Tepper Madover on Broadway."
The Donmar Warehouse production of Red, a new American play by John Logan about the master of twentieth century abstract impressionism, Mark Rothko, opened at the John Golden Theatre on 1 Apr 2010, following previews from 11 Mar, playing a limited engagement through to the 27 Jun 2010.
The show opened to mixed, but mostly positive reviews: I was completely engaged (newyorktheatreguide.com); Intense and exciting (NY Times); Never takes off (NY Post); Electrifying play of ideas (Variety).
Red won six 2010 Tony Awards for Best Play, Best Director (Michael Grandage), Best Featured Actor (Eddie Redmayne), Best Set (Christopher Oram), Best Lighting (Neil Austin) and Best Sound Design (Adam Cork).
Red stars Alfred Molina and Eddie Redmayne, who created their roles in the world premiere production at the Donmar. The production is directed by Donmar artistic director Michael Grandage. Red marks playwright Logan's Broadway debut.
Red is set in 1958 as New York artist Mark Rothko (Alfred Molina) has received the art world's largest commission to create a series of murals for The Four Seasons restaurant in the new Seagram building on Park Avenue. Under the watchful gaze of his young assistant, Ken (Eddie Redmayne) and the threatening presence of a new generation of artists, Rothko faces his greatest challenge yet: to create a definitive work for an extraordinary setting.
The production is designed by Christopher Oram, with lighting design by Neil Austin. Composer and sound designer is Adam Cork.
Red had its world premiere at the Donmar Warehouse, where it played from 3 Dec 2009 - 6 Feb 2010. The production was nominated for three 2010 Olivier Awards, including Best Play, with Eddie Redmayne winning the award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
