Porgy and Bess: the london production, directed by Trevor Nunn, is reportedly to open on Broadway
The London production of Gerswin's musical Porgy and Bess, directed by Trevor Nunn, is reportedly to open on Broadway in the 2007 - 2008 season.
No further details are known about the Broadway production, which will be produced by the same team - Richard Frankel, Tom Viertel, Steven Baruch, Marc Routh, Howard Panter for Ambassador Theatre Group and Tulbart Productions - that have presented the London run of the musical, which is currently playing at the London Savoy Theatre.
The musical opened in London to positive notices on 9 Nov 2006, following previews from 25 Oct 2006. The Indepentent said of the show " 'Electrifying' is an overworked word in the critical lexicon, but if ever a show deserved it, it is Trevor Nunn's magnificent revival of the Gershwins' Porgy and Bess."
Porgy and Bess has music by George Gershwin, lyrics by DuBose Heyward & Ira Gershwin and a book by Dubose Heyward, based on 'Porgy' by Dubose Heyward and Dorothy Heyward and is a bittersweet love story set in South Carolina during the Great Depression. The show was the first portrayal of American working-class black culture in a Broadway musical.
The musical has had five previous Broadway productions, the first was when it premiered in 1935 and was directed by Rouben Mamoulian. The last Broadway production opened at the Radio City Music Hall in Apr 83 and was directed by Jack O'Brien.
