Pacific Overtures extends limited engagement at CSC
Classic Stage Company has announced an extension for its current off-Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim's musical Pacific Overtures, starring "Star Trek" legend George Takei, which began performances on April 5, 2017, and is scheduled to officially open on May 4. The limited engagement will now end on June 18, 2017 (instead of May 27).
Pacific Overtures features music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by John Weidman. This production is directed by Tony winner and CSC Artistic Director John Doyle.
Synopsis: "In 1853, Commodore Matthew Perry sailed to Japan on a U.S mission to open up trade relations at any cost. Pacific Overtures tells the tale of a samurai and a fisherman who are caught up in the Westernization of the East."
Joining George Takei (as "Reciter") are (in alphabetical order) Karl Josef Co, Marc delaCruz, Steven Eng, Megan Masako Haley, Ann Harada, Kimberly Immanuel, Austin Ku, Kelvin Moon Loh, Orville Mendoza, Marc Oka and Thom Sesma.
The creative team behind Pacific Overtures has also been announced and features musical direction by Greg Jarrett, musical supervision by Rob Berman, orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick, costume design by Ann Hould-Ward, lighting design by Jane Cox, and sound design by Dan Moses Schreier.
George Takei made his Broadway debut in 'Allegiance' in 2015. He is best known for his role as Mr. Sulu in the original 'Star Trek' TV series and its accompanying six movies. Other screen credits include 'Larry Crowne,' 'The Great Buck Howard,' 'The Red Canvas,' 'You Don't Mess With the Zohan,' 'DC 9/11: Time of Crisis,' 'The Green Berets,' 'Majority of One,' 'Kissinger and Nixon,' 'Prisoners of the Sun aka Blood Oath,' 'Return From the River Kwai,' 'An American Dream,' 'Hawaii Five-0,' 'True Justice,' 'The Big Bang Theory,' 'Community,' 'Heroes,' 'Will & Grace,' 'Malcolm in the Middle,' 'Freddie,' 'Scrubs,' 'Grosse Pointe' and 'The Six Million Dollar Man.'
