New York Premiere of Bauer - 59E59 Theater A
San Francisco Playhouse will present the New York premiere of Lauren Gunderson's Bauer, directed by Bill English, playing at 59E59 Theater A from 02 Sep through to 12 Oct 2014, opening on 09 Sep 2014.
Rudolf Bauer (1889-1953) was a modernist artist and one of the 20th century's most important, yet nearly forgotten, painters.
Bauer is an imagined face-off between Bauer and the two women he loved most, as each confronts the passions of his life and art. Considered by many art historians and critics to have had a major impact on modern artists like Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, many of Bauer's paintings remain banished to this day in the basement of the Guggenheim Museum.
The play, which has previously enjoyed a run at the San Francisco Playhouse, is part of a Bauer season, which also sees a public television documentary special ("Betrayal: The Life and Art of Rudolf Bauer" on THIRTEEN, the public television station serving the New York metropolitan area, on 25 Aug 2014 at 9pm) and gallery exhibition (at the German Consulate General, 871 United Nations Plaza from 2-19 Sep 2014).
