Set 30 years before the events of Netflix's Stranger Things, The First Shadow tells the origin story of Henry Creel, who would grow up to become the monstrous villain Vecna and turn the sleepy town of Hawkins, Indiana upside down. The play debuted on Broadway in March 2025, winning four Tony Awards for its scenic, lighting, and sound design and special effects.

Stranger Things: The First Shadow is written by Kate Trefry (from a story by Trefry, Jack Thorne, and Stranger Things showrunners/creators the Duffer Brothers), directed by Stephen Daldry, and co-directed by Justin Martin.
