Miss Firecracker Contest & The Velocity of Autumn: both shows postponed indefinitely
Producer Larry Kaye, a newcomer to Broadway, has told the New York Times that the shows The Miss Firecracker Contest and The Velocity of Autumn have been indefinitely postponed. Both comedies were scheduled to arrive on Broadway in the Spring of 2013.
Kaye told the New York Times that The Miss Firecracker Contest, which was to have been directed by Judith Ivey, was being delayed because of difficulties "that stood in the way of getting our particular dream cast."
According to the report Larry Kaye had hoped to bring actor Parker Posey on Board, to join the previously announced Amber Tamblyn. However, Posey would not be available because she was developing a comedy pilot with NBC.
Award nominee Amber Tamblyn ("Joan of Arcadia") had previously been announced to play the lead role of 'Carnelle Scott,' a role first played by Holly Hunter when the comedy was first presented to New York audiences in 1984 at the Manhattan Theater Club. Hunter went on to reprise the role in the 1989 feature film "Miss Firecracker."
In The Miss Firecracker Contest, Carnelle Scott is a Southern orphan living in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Carnelle is furiously rehearsing her patriotic tap dance for the Miss Firecracker Contest - hoping that a victory will salvage her tarnished reputation as the town's 'Miss Hot Tamale' and allow her to leave Brookhaven in a 'crimson blaze of glory.' The unexpected arrival of her cousin Elain, a former Miss Firecracker Queen, (who has walked out on her rich but boring husband and two small children) and Elain's eccentric brother, Delmount (recently released from a mental institution), threatens to derail Carnelle's total makeover.
Kaye also told the New York Times that Beth Henley's two character play The Velocity of Autumn has been indefinitely delayed because he was unable to secure "a suitable theater this season that would be a great fit for this two-person, very intimate play."
The Velocity of Autumn was to have been directed by Molly Smith, and star Estelle Parsons (Alexandra) and Stephen Spinella (Chris).
In The Velocity of Autumn 80-year-old Alexandra, is an artist facing the indignities of old age and her family's insistence on moving her to a nursing home. With nothing to lose, Alexandra has locked herself in her Brooklyn brownstone with a pile of Molotov cocktails and is now in a standoff with her children and the police. When Alexandra is visited by her youngest son Chris - who has climbed into her second floor window ending a 20-year absence from her life - in the blink of an eye the emotional bombs start detonating.
Lynch also told the New York Times that he had not "not finished raising the $2 million to $3 million for each show, but had been optimistic that he would have, with the right cast and theater."
The producer said he still hopes to produce both shows during the 2013-2014 Broadway season, but he had no firm plans at this time.
