Lysistrata Jones: musical acomedy rriving in Nov 2011

Following a critically acclaimed off-Broadway run, the new musical comedy Lysistrata Jones, loosely based on Aristophanes' classic comedy 'Lysistrata,' will transfer to Broadway this fall, opening at the Walter Kerr Theatre on 14 Dec 2011, following previews from 12 Nov 2011.

Lysistrata Jones is written by Tony nominated Douglas Carter Beane (Sister Act, Xanadu, The Little Dog Laughed) and composer/lyricist Lewis Flinn, and is directed and choreographed by Tony nominee Dan Knechtges (Xanadu).

The Athens University basketball team hasn't won a game in 30 years. But when spunky transfer student Lysistrata Jones dares the squad's fed-up girlfriends to stop "giving it up" to their boyfriends until they win a game, their legendary losing streak could be coming to an end.

The Transport Group presented an Off-Broadway production of Lysistrata Jones at the Gym at Judson Memorial Church, earlier this year from 15 May - 24 Jun 2011. The show opened to critical acclaim: An effervescent, tasty and surprisingly filling new musical with high-octane performances (Ben Brantley, The New York Times); A terrific splash of fun with an infectious score! (Elisabeth Vincentelli, New York Post), 'Hilarious and bouncy with strong tunes and smart, witty lyrics (Jennifer Farrar, Associated Press); There's an obscene amount of fun being had in Lysistrata Jones, a sassy new quasi-teen musical. (David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter/Reuters).

The Broadway production will feature the same creative team as the Off-Broadway run: direction and choreography by Dan Knechtges, set design by Allen Moyer, costume design is by David C. Woolard and Thomas LeGalley, lighting by Michael Gottlieb and sound by Tony Meola.

The Off-BRoadway company starred Patti Murin as 'Lysistrata Jones,' and also featured Alexander Aguilar (Uardo), Katie Boren (Lampito Kanagawa), Lindsay Chambers (Robin/Shelley), Max Kumangai (Tyllus), Liz Mikel (Heterai), Kat Nejat (Cleonice), Josh Segarra (Mick), LaQuet Sharnell (Mhyrinne), Jason Tam (Xander), Teddy Toye (Harold) and Alex Wyse (Cinesius).

Casting for the Broadway production of Lysistrata Jones will be announced shortly. It is not known if any of the Off-Broadway company will reprise their roles on Broadway.

The musical comedy had it's world premiere at the Dallas Theater Center in Dallas, TX in January, 2010.

Lysistrata Jones is being produced on Broadway by Paula Herold and Alan Wasser.
