Kitt & Yorkey's Freaky Friday musical in the works
According to an Equity Casting Notice, Disney Theatrical are set to mount a developmental lab for a musical adaptation of the house of mouse's movie Freaky Friday.
Christopher Ashley direts the musical, which features a book by Bridget Carpenter, with music and lyrics by the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winning team behind Next to Normal, Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, who are also currently represented on the Great White Way with If/Then starring Idina Menzel.
Synopsis: "An overworked mother and her daughter do not get along. When they switch bodies, each is forced to adapt to the others life for one Freaky Friday."
Originally a children's novel written by Mary Rodgers in 1972, a film adaptation was released by Disney in 1976, starring Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster. A TV version was then aired in 1995, with Shelley Long and Gaby Hoffmann taking on the mother and daughter roles. And finally, the 2003 film remake of the comedy starred Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan.
It was also previously reported that the duo of Kitt and Yorkey are also working on a musical adpatation of 2012's Magic Mike, which starred Channing Tatum and Matthew McConaughey as male strippers, along with musical adaptations of the 2007 film The Visitor and 1993 film Dave.
